Dog Interrupts Weather Forecast

A dog in Edmonton, Canada, does not care about the weather forecast.

He just wants to play.

Ripple, a part Mastiff, is from the Edmonton Humane Society and he was suppose to help weatherman Mike Sobel report the weather.

See what he does instead:

Despite Losing Her Life To Violence, 6 Year Old Catherine Hubbard’s Dream Lives On - 'Catherine’s Rescue Barn'

We all recognize that tragedy is a part of life, but some events are nearly unspeakable and impossible to understand. In 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School was the victim of one of the most appalling acts of violence this country has seen. The facts have been well documented, and the years have done nothing to make sense of what happened, or made it any less horrific.

One of the victims was Catherine Hubbard, a first grader, and an animal enthusiast. Her passion was animals, both real and stuffed. When she met an animal, regardless of fur, slime, scales, or size, she would ask it to “tell all your friends I am kind.” She wanted all animals to know she wanted to be friends with them and protect them. In kindergarten, Catherine made herself business cards for “Catherine’s Animal Shelter,” and listed herself as “Care Taker.” Despite being so small, she managed to dream bigger than most adults.

Death Leaves Only 6 Northern White Rhinos in World, Conservancy Says

A northern white rhino named Suni died last week, leaving only six of this rare subspecies left in the world, according to a statement from Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.

The 34-year-old Suni was one of four northern white rhinos at the conservancy. Worldwide, he was only one of two breeding males, according to Ol Pejeta.

Bears Are on the Ballot in Maine as Hunting Methods Are Debated

It has been a big year for bears in the news, especially in Maine, where voters on Nov. 4 face a question that has bedeviled other bear-heavy states: how to keep the species’ population at bay in the face of pressure from animal rights groups lobbying to ban certain hunting methods.

The campaign around the Maine Bear Hunting Ban Initiative, which will appear on the ballot as Question 1, has shed light on Maine’s unique status in the wildlife world. It remains the only state in the lower 48 where hunters may use bait, traps and dogs to nab bears.

How do you know your dog has reached his or her senior years? The most common signs of aging in dogs are too often what lead to their owners giving them up or what discourage potential adopters from taking them home. Despite their age-related problems, senior dogs still have a lot of life and love to share.

Deadly Spider Found in Family's Bananas

The last thing you'd expect to find lurking in your bananas is a creature whose Greek scientific name means "murderess."

But that's exactly what one London family found after a grocery delivery from the Waitrose supermarket chain, the Daily Mail reports. The family patriarch (known only as "Tim") was unloading the groceries when he spied the venomous Brazilian wandering spider—the world's most dangerous arachnid, LiveScience reports—and panicked, dropping the bananas into a bowl and trapping the spider by one of its legs.

Elderly Owners Can No Longer Care For Bonded Dogs: Dogs To Be Put Down Next Week

Two deeply bonded dogs are losing their family, and perhaps their life, because their elderly owners in Brooklyn, New York, are losing their home. A friend of the family is desperate to find the dogs a home before next week, when the elderly couple's son plans to put the dogs, named "Blade," and "Siah," down.

The family friend explained the son's decision:

The last thing he wants to do is put the dogs to sleep, he loves them, however he thinks it is cruel to dump them in a shelter that would separate them and probably end up euthanizing them anyway.

They were in boarding for a while, in different cages, and Siah stopped eating nearly starving himself to death because he was not with Blade.

When he came out, he was so emaciated and both of them were sick. The son can not see that happen again

Blade (tan) is five years of age and altered. Siah is eight years of age and not altered. The family has no history of the dogs around cats or children and is unable to determine if they would be a good fit with families who include them.

The following information was shared about the pair:

They are located in Brooklyn. They love to play with each other, other dogs and people. They are very friendly, love everyone. They love toys and carry them around everywhere. They are not overly hyper and also love their cuddle time. They are more then happy to lay with each other and their people all day but also love going to the park. They are up to date on all shots, have no medical conditions and no special needs.

Anyone with questions or who can possibly help is asked to email: nicolemylan@yahoo.com.

The Story of Fancy, An Adorable Chinese Shar-Pei/Terrier Mix, Found Dying in the Street - Rescued by Good Samaritans - Looking for a Forever Home

If you are following my blog, then you know I share a variety of animal stories. I want to share the story of Fancy, a very special dog, as she is very dear to my heart.

Her story:
June 13, 2014, was a very hot balmy day in Maryland. It was about 3:30 p.m., when I decided to look out of my front door.

As I looked out of the storm door, something caught my eye moving in the grass of the large apartment complex adjacent to my home. I stepped out on the porch to get a closer look, I spotted what looked to be a small dog crawling in the grass. I immediately called for my husband to come. As we walked over, I looked into the face of a sad little dog who looked to be in pain.

I grabbed my phone and called the Prince George's County Animal Shelter. While I was on the phone she continued to crawl further into the street and just laid down. My husband began directing traffic around her. I bend down crying, looking at her little body covered in mange. Her stomach was raw and red from scratching. She looked dehydrated, and hungry. I began talking to her and assuring her that I was not going to leave her. I will never forget her eyes, they were so sad.

Within 30 minutes, she was picked up by Prince George's County Animal Control.

I kept in touch with the animal shelter, getting updates on her condition. She received excellent treatment and was progressing very well.

I spend weeks contacting animal rescues across the country trying to get someone to take her. Pit Bull Mixes are illegal in Prince George's County. She could not be adopted out from the Prince George's County Animal Shelter, and could only be released to a rescue group.

On September 9, 2014, I received an email from the Prince George's County Animal Shelter staff telling me that, Fancy, a named that had given her, would be transferring to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, in Alexandria, VA.

She was being transferred because she would have a better chance of adoption at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. I continued following her progress with them as she was still on medication and doing really well.

I received an email today from a friend, at the Washington Humane Society, Washington, DC.  She was attending their Frisky Business Adoption Event this past Saturday. As she was looking at the dogs, she noticed one that looked familiar (she had seen Fancy's picture constantly posted on my facebook page). She decided to check, and found out that is was Fancy.

I was told that sometimes shelters swap animals, and apparently Fancy was chosen in a swap from the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria to the Washington Humane Society.

I am sharing Fancy's story to help get her adopted into a loving forever home. Fancy became the staff's pick in Prince George's County Animal Shelter, and even has a leash with her name on it! All shelters have told me that she is a sweet, adorable little girl that gives out plenty of puppy kisses!

Did I mention she loves belly rubs!

While I am a resident of Prince George's County and it would be illegal for me to adopt Fancy, I will continue to share her story to help her get adopted.

If you have room in your heart, and in your home for Fancy, please contact the Washington Humane Society, Please read: STEPS TO ADOPT

Fancy has been a busy girl, she walked with the WHS PACK (People & Animal Cardio Klub) group, and attended their Frisky Business Adoption Event this past Saturday.

Take a look at her adorable pictures below!

Pit Bull Vote Aims to Settle Disputes Over Breeds

Englewood, Colo. (AP) — Sharee Talbot wants her dog back. For now, though, she has to drive out of town to visit Buddy because the two-year-old pit bull isn't allowed in her hometown of Aurora.

"Look at him. He's funny. He's goofy," Talbot said on a recent visit with Buddy and his foster family at an Englewood dog park. Talbot had to give up Buddy last year after an Aurora animal control officer seized him for violating city's ban on pit bulls.

Study: Elephants May Know When it's Raining 150 Miles Away

Maybe the Weather channel should start hiring elephants. A study in PLoS ONE suggests the creatures can detect rainstorms happening 150 miles away, possibly by hearing them even from that far off.

Migrating elephants are known to change direction out of the blue, and researchers haven't been certain why. The Namibian research team figured it might be because of rain—as Phys.org explains, elephants are regularly looking for water in the region, which is dry outside of the January-to-March rainy season.

Birds vs. Drones: The Battle for the Skies Continues

I can’t really overstate how much I enjoyed the brief video we published last week of a hawk taking out somebody’s drone. Apart from being a viscerally satisfying and effectively concise clip, it struck me as an almost poetic comment on the state of nature vs. machinery.

After all, we know that some humans are freaked out by drones to the point that they will blow them out of the sky. But have we thought to poll the animal kingdom on this latest human-made intrusion into their lives and habitats?

New York City's Rats Are Carrying Viruses No One's Seen Before

Everyone who's ever used a New York City subway knows that they're teeming with rats, and that said rats are, almost by definition, disgusting. But no one had quantified just how disgusting they are ... until now.

A team of scientists at Columbia University trapped 133 Norway rats — Rattus norvegicus — from five sites in midtown and lower Manhattan, and used DNA sequencing to catalogue the pathogens they carry.
