Hawks for Hire: Phoenix company using bird of prey to address pigeon problems

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - They look harmless enough, perched on top of rooftops, soaking up some Arizona sun. But make no mistake, pigeons have a lot of friends and they don’t play nice. Pigeons are a serious problem in communities across the Valley. That’s where “Tony Hawk” comes in. The majestic bird is an expert in catching pigeons.

Bladen Benson is the owner of Desert Kings Falconry, a bird control business in the Phoenix area that specializes in removing pigeons from your property. “A lot of companies out here use poisons or cages, or other traps to catch them and remove them,” said Benson. “That’s all human work. It’s humane, but you can’t get more natural than this.”

The Brazilian Bird Thats Nearly The Size Of A Human

One look into the menacing eyes of any bird of prey and shivers start rattling through your vertebrae. Their cold-blooded stare pierces your soul. They're not looking for a new friend. They're in the business of hunting, and business is booming.

If you ever watched a Master Falconer work closely with one of their razor-clawed trainees, you immediately understand how careful the handler must be. Birds of prey like owls, hawks, and eagles reign down with full-force when provoked. But all the predatory birds pale in comparison to one Brazilian beast.

Crew Rescues Cat Stuck In Tree For 3 Days After Being Dropped By Hawk

How many cat up the tree stories have we seen and heard? There is the memorable one from the first Superman movie, where the little girl goes running into her mother to tell her Fluffy was rescued by a flying man in a cape. (To which the mother promptly replies, “Didn’t I tell you to stop lying!?”) Cats routinely scale up the side of trees either in pursuit of prey or just for play.

Well, this is one story that you can chalk up to the tallest of tree stories, and this one is actually true according to first responders in Ohio. The cat in question just also happens to be named Fluffy (what cat isn’t) but according to its owner it was perched at the top of a 40 foot tree for about three days. After the third day when Fluffy wouldn’t come down she decided it was time to all the fire department.

Winged Beast Descends from Heavens to Trash Missouri Man’s Bedroom

Picture of man holding owl
The explosive burst followed by the sound of shattering glass in Drew Arnold’s bedroom probably meant one of two things: Either an intruder was entering through the window, or a tree had smashed through his roof.

Sitting a few feet away in his living room, Arnold, who had just rolled out of bed a few minutes earlier, had no choice but to investigate.

He crept toward his bedroom door and opened it cautiously.

“Was he wearing any pants?” you may be wondering. The answer — which becomes relevant — is no.

Seattle's Live Hawk Mascot Flew into Stands and Landed on a Fan's Head

Picture of Seattle Seahawks
Who says the ‘Hawks never go astray at home?

Despite having the best home-field advantage in the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks had a major mishap on Sunday when Taima, the team’s longtime live hawk mascot, took an impromptu detour into the stands and landed on the head of a fan.

Big ups to the gentleman’s poise upon the sneak hawk attack. Whereas others (such as myself) would have flipped out and run away like a cartoon character being attacked by a swarm of bees, this guy played it cool, ducking his head and waiting for the bird’s inevitable departure.

Birds vs. Drones: The Battle for the Skies Continues

I can’t really overstate how much I enjoyed the brief video we published last week of a hawk taking out somebody’s drone. Apart from being a viscerally satisfying and effectively concise clip, it struck me as an almost poetic comment on the state of nature vs. machinery.

After all, we know that some humans are freaked out by drones to the point that they will blow them out of the sky. But have we thought to poll the animal kingdom on this latest human-made intrusion into their lives and habitats?
