WHS-WARL CEO and President, Lisa LaFontaine was on NBC Washington speaking about Clear the Shelters and the impact of a pet. She introduced Rhino, a dog from the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League looking for his forever home.

Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League, as well as shelters and rescues all over our region, will waive most adoption fees for our NBC4’s #‎ClearTheShelters effort! Come down to this event on Saturday, July 23rd, If you have room in your heart and your home for a new sweetie ... like Rhino!

How could you say "No" to this face?! I'm Rhino, a year old Shar-Pei mix. I'm as friendly as can be, super wiggly, and happy to play with other dogs. I can be a little pushy towards my dog friends if they don't want to play with me, so if I go to a new home with other dogs, I'll need one that can put up with me! I'm hoping that I'll get adopted quickly by the right family so we can play together! Come down to visit me, please!

Meet the Woman Who Has Taken it Upon Herself to Raise the Elephant Orphans

The ivory trade has been running rampant for decades now, and these poor gentle giants suffer immensely at the hands of it. Hundreds, if not thousands, of elephants are killed every year for their tusks to be sawed off and sold on the black market.

This can leave many baby elephants without the mothers they need to take care of them, and they end up dying as well. It can be difficult to track down these poachers and see that they’re brought to justice, but one woman is taking the task into her own hands to ensure that these creatures are no longer mistreated and murdered for their tusks.

Since 1977, Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick has taken it upon herself to raise the elephant orphans who have suffered both physical and emotional injuries from the loss of their mothers.

They’re provided with enough space to roam, and each have their own handler to care for them throughout the day to ensure that all of their needs are met.

Her years of study have helped her to develop a formula that is similar to an elephant mother’s milk, making it easier for these babies to develop as they should to be big and strong.

Daphne’s main goal is to help these creatures recover so that they can be returned to the wild and help to repopulate the wild herds that have been diminishing in numbers.

Daphne is so passionate about the ending of the ivory trade that her open arms have been extended to rhinos as well, whose numbers are dwindling into the verge of extinction. Watch the video below.

Death Leaves Only 6 Northern White Rhinos in World, Conservancy Says

A northern white rhino named Suni died last week, leaving only six of this rare subspecies left in the world, according to a statement from Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.

The 34-year-old Suni was one of four northern white rhinos at the conservancy. Worldwide, he was only one of two breeding males, according to Ol Pejeta.

Global March for Elephants and Rhinos - Please Join the Global March on October 4, 2014 to Call for an End to the Killing and a Ban on Ivory and Rhino Horn Before it's Too Late

On October 4th people in cities throughout the world will march as one voice to save Elephants and Rhinos. The countdown to their extinction has begun - unless action is taken now, we will lose these majestic, highly intelligent, and emotionally sentient creatures FOREVER.

Up to 50,000 Elephants are being killed every year so their tusks can be carved into ivory trinkets. A Rhino is slaughtered once every 9-11 hours for Rhino Horn. Their only hope for survival lies in an immediate end to the ivory and rhino horn trade (both "legal" and "illegal") and a meaningful opportunity to recover from decades of mass slaughter.
