Humane Rescue Alliance is Participating in NBC Washington's Clear the Shelters

HRA is participating in NBC Washington's Clear the Shelters, but it looks a little different this year. Instead of dedicating just one day to the event, we’ll be virtually celebrating all month long by sharing some of our favorite Clear the Shelters success stories, as well as dogs, cats, rabbits, and more who are available for virtual adoption!

On August 29, we will not be holding the in-person event at our shelters out of an abundance of caution due to COVID-19. Instead, we’ll be celebrating the day online. Keep an eye on our social pages for more details about our digital celebration!

Can’t adopt but still want to participate in the fun? You can with a donation to HRA! Your donation will help support the animals in our care, from medical treatments to daily enrichment and beyond. Donate here: SUPPORT

Clear the Shelters Interactive Map: Find Animal Shelters Waiving Adoption Fees This Saturday, August 18

Animal shelters across the country are teaming up with NBC and Telemundo stations to find loving homes for pets in need.

The fourth annual Clear the Shelters event, a nationwide pet adoption initiative, will be held Aug. 18. Hundreds of shelters — including locations in D.C., Maryland and Virginia — will waive or reduce fees as part of the one-day adoption drive.

The goal is to #ClearTheShelters by finding forever homes for as many animals as possible.

More than 61,000 pets were adopted during last year's event, including more than 1,300 in the D.C. area. One of those was a dog named Odysseus, then 10 years old. The odds weren't necessarily in his favor: He was a senior dog and also a large one, at 73 pounds. But the German shepherd went home with his new humans that day and found his happily ever after.

Washington, DC - 154 Animals Were Adopted at the Humane Rescue Alliance’s ‘Clear the Shelter Event’ on August 19, 2017

I love animals, and I love attending adoption events. I had the pleasure of attending the Humane Rescue Alliance’s ‘Clear the Shelter’ event on August 19, 2017. I really enjoyed watching the potential adopters interacting with the animals. 154 animals were adopted that day!

While this year’s event is over…that doesn’t mean that you can’t give a homeless animal a loving forever home. I love ‘Clearing the Shelters’ events because it allows room for other homeless animals to come in receive treatment, if needed, and a chance to find their forever homes.

170 Animals Adopted During Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League “Clear the Shelters’ Event Saturday, July 23rd

Washington, DC - The Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League’s adoption centers on New York Avenue and Oglethorpe Street are eerily quiet today thanks to a very successful Clear the Shelters adoption event on Saturday.  WHS-WARL processed 170 adoptions during the seven hour-long adoption event.

WHS-WARL teamed up with NBC4 to host NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations’ Clear the Shelters second annual nationwide pet adoption drive, which featured fee-waived adoptions to qualified families.

“We were absolutely thrilled with the turnout and success of Clear the Shelters 2016,” said Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO for WHS-WARL.  “In just one day, we changed the lives of 170 families by finding homes for these wonderful animals that – in most cases – have simply been unlucky so far in their lives.  We want to thank NBC4 for their outstanding support for this event and we look forward to next year!”

Interest in the event was evident in the hours leading up to Saturday.  Potential adopters began lining up outside of the shelter at 11:00 p.m. Friday night, with customers patiently waiting for the doors to open the following morning in hopes of finding a new, furry family member.   Hundreds of potential adopters visited the organization’s two shelters throughout the day.   The final count for the day included 68 dogs, 97 cats, and five small animals adopted from WHS-WARL during Clear the Shelters.

While WHS-WARL is celebrating the success of Saturday’s event, the sobering reality remains that the population of pets needing homes at the organization’s two shelters will steadily rise again over the coming days.  WHS-WARL encourages those that did not adopt on Saturday to consider adopting a homeless pet in the near future.
