Florida Cat Receives Life-Saving Blood Transfusion From Dog

Who says cats and dogs don't mix?

A Florida Keys cat is back on its paws after receiving a life-saving blood transfusion from a dog.

Buttercup underwent the risky operation at Marathon Veterinary Hospital after vets warned it would take too long to ship cat blood over from the mainland.

The anemic orange tabby, found to have a 7% rather than the usual 35% red blood cell-count, received the so-called xenotransfusion on Sept. 16.

The 4-hour procedure, which has been carried out on just 62 cats in the U.S., saw blood from a West Palm Beach dog blood bank infused into the pained cat.

Dog's Touching Love Letter To Owners Who Abandoned Him Will Change How You See Strays

"Never Say Goodbye," a poignant Purina-sponsored short film, imagines the answer. It follows an abandoned shiba inu as he tries to find his way back to the family he loved so dearly and struggles to come to terms with the fact that they might not want him anymore.

Trixie and Texas: Black Labs Found at Landfill - Looking for Their Forever Home, As Time is Running Out

In Orangeburg County Animal Control and Shelter in South Carolina, all of the kennels are full. Trixie and Texas were both picked up as strays a few days ago at a local landfill; no one even knows if they are related, but volunteers provide the following heart-wrenching information about these two black Labrador retrievers:

"We don't know if this is even the mama to this little guy. They were both found at the land fill. He cowers behind her...like she is his protector. Both of these are beautiful dogs. She is really friendly. Texas is still a little scared but certainly is handsome."

The kennels at Orangeburg County Animal Control are currently being occupied by dogs involved in court cases; therefore because of lack of space, strays and surrendered dogs are only allowed the minimum time limits before they are euthanized.

Send this article on to a Facebook friend and to animal rescues. Their stories have been shared 136 times, but no one has stepped up to help. Sharing saves lives.

Man Accused of Starving Dog Faces Charge of Aggravated Animal Cruelty

According to Friday's My News 13, a man near Winter Park, Florida, is facing a charge of aggravated animal cruelty for allegedly starving a pit bull.

An emaciated dog named "Zola," was rescued from 22-year-old Aaron Dennis' apartment on Thursday; authorities noted that the home was covered in urine and feces and the skeletal dog was unable to stand when they arrived. According to the Orlando Sentinel, a concerned neighbor contacted the authorities to report that a dog had been abandoned in Dennis' apartment.

Dennis told investigators that he had been out of town for a few days and did not know that the dog was sick.

Zola is currently in the custody of Orange County Animal Services and her prognosis for survival is unknown. Dennis was booked into jail.

Dog Drinking In Slow Motion From 'The Secret Life Of Dogs' (Video)

Leave it to ultra-slow motion to reveal the true genius of our furry friends.

We kind of suspected that dogs were brilliant -- in an understated, not-at-all showy kind of way.

And, sure, many of you already know that they have a rather unique drinking style -- all that water seeming to slosh and splash up against our faithful furball's face. In real-time, dogs seem to douse their faces, hoping some of that water creeps down their throats.

But, seen in ultra slow motion, that simple act has an utterly fascinating grace.

Check out this clip from the also-kind-of-brilliant documentary The Secret Life of Dogs. It shows an Alsatian drinking water filmed with a Phantom camera at 1000 frames per second.
