What You Need to Know About the Mosquito-Borne Disease Ravaging the Caribbean

If you’re traveling to the Caribbean anytime soon, bring the DEET. Chikungunya, a virulent mosquito-borne illness with no known cure is sweeping the islands. The disease is similar to dengue and causes extreme muscle pain that can last months or even years; it has been fatal in rare cases.

Historically, chikungunya (pronounced chik-en-GUN-ya), which was first discovered in Tanzania in 1952, has been more prevalent in Africa and Asia. Saint Martin was the first location in the Western Hemisphere to report cases of the disease in December 2013. In recent months it has spread across the region, with over 10,000 cases on islands like Guadeloupe and Martinique. Even Tony Saint Bart’s hasn’t been spared. There have also been isolated cases as far away as Florida and Venezuela.

A Man Volunteered To Be 'Eaten Alive' By An Anaconda: Discovery, In Need Of A Rebound, Is Going to Air It

This year, Discovery will air a special that consists of a man being eaten alive by an anaconda and making it back out again, all without killing the snake or himself.

And it’s not even during fall sweeps. Discovery is airing the special, “Eaten Alive,” on Dec. 7.

Paul Rosolie, the guy getting eaten, is a naturalist and wildlife filmmaker who runs a company called Tamandua Expeditions that funds rainforest conservation through tourism. The stunt has already been filmed and edited. Spoiler alert: Rosolie lived to tell the tale. In fact, he’s tweeting about it. Rosolie accomplished the feat wearing a “custom-built snake-proof suit,” as Discovery put it, covering himself in pig’s blood to make himself appetizing.

Seeing Eye Dog and Her Blind Friend Hope to Find a Home with Room

Buster may night be able to see, but his beloved companion, Molly, is there to help him navigate the world. Now this dynamic duo - who are currently at the Noah Center in Stanwood, Washington - are hoping to find a home with room for two.

KOMO 4 News reported today that Buster and Molly found themselves at an animal shelter after they had been dumped. Fortunately for this bonded pair of dogs, NOAH 's staff saw them and took them in.

When NOAH took in the two dogs, staff members could tell that the dogs were different, but they weren't sure why. Eight-year-old Molly the beagle and beagle mix Buster were very closely bonded - and soon staff saw why: Buster couldn't see - and Molly is his seeing eye dog.

"Molly is a seeing eye dog, so for her brother she helps to make sure he doesn't get into situations that could be dangerous for him," stated Lani Kurtz, NOAH's adoption director.

Molly uses her body to guide Buster around - and NOAH is determined that the two dogs find a home together. While their first adoption didn't work out, staff remain hopeful for this canine couple.

NOAH's website described this canine couple:

Molly and Buster came to us from Chehalis, Washington as a couple of goofy and energetic beagles that have so much love and appreciation for life; a pair of friends we could all learn a lesson from. We knew that the two had an immense love for one another, but what we grew to find out was that Buster needed Molly for more than just a companion. Buster is blind, you see, and Molly is his eyes.

The two are a remarkable pair, Buster following Molly's lead around the property here at NOAH. The two couldn't be more friendly towards each other or towards us humans. Because the need for Molly is so high for Buster, the two must go together, but who would want to split them up? They are no longer spring chickens, and don't have a fondness for children, so a home without kids would be best.

Stop by The NOAH Center today and meet these two dogs; they will teach you a little something about the companionship of dog, and the love for others.

Kurtz added: "They have to go together. Buster needs Molly. We will keep them until we find that perfect place for them."

Can you offer a home to Buster and Molly? Their adoption fee is $200 for both of them - and on Mondays, there's a $50 discount for senior dogs.

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month in MD, VA, DC and the World

November is upon us and this month is special because international organizations are celebrating Adopt a Senior Pet month. CNN posted a video with celebrity senior dog Marnie and her owner Shirley. It is a great story about what Shirley Braha went through with her experience, expectations and surprises regarding the adoption of Marnie.

Dogs can spend quite a bit of their life in shelters waiting to be adopted. Most people tend to adopt puppies or younger dogs, and the seniors can sometimes wait a long time to be adopted, or simply wait out their time until they are showing signs of old age and die at the shelter. That is a pretty sad story, so here is some information to help interested people in adopting an older dog.

Older dogs tend to not have the usual problems with chewing, potty training, and adolescent personality issues. An older dog will not grow any bigger that what they are when adopted. An older dog may be easier to train, with their attention span a little longer than puppies. They are more experienced and there is a good chance that someone has worked with the dog while in the shelter to make them adoptable. The ASPCA continues this discussion by including ideas that support the previous statements, such as, they are super cuddly, they mess less, they settle into their surroundings more quickly, they may be more of a couch potato, and the new owners get to be a real hero, saving a dog that may not normally be saved.

The Senior Dogs Project website has state by state listings for adoption areas in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, and even include a listing of organizations dedicated strictly to older senior dogs. In Maryland, House with a Heart - Pet Sanctuary is in Laytonsville, Maryland. Sher Polvinale created this sanctuary with her late husband, Joe, dedicated to give senior and special needs dogs a place to live out the rest of their lives comfortably. House with a Heart or HWAH has been featured on multiple television interview shows, which can be viewed here.

The Senior Dogs Project also includes a great list of agencies that can help find the perfect senior dog for adoption. This list includes WARL and the Washington Humane Society among others in Washington D.C. In Maryland, the Humane Society of Prince George’s County, and petharbor.com work hard to find homes for the seniors that end up in their shelters.

A Pet Lover’s Companion, shows a giant directory of everything that is pets in the Washington D.C. metro, Maryland and Virginia areas. There are plenty of ways in the D.C. Metro area to adopt a senior pet this month and help save a life.

In case there is not a lot of time in the schedule to go to shelters personally and look for the senior dog of choice, The Grey Muzzle Organization is dedicated to helping homeless senior dogs. If what folks are looking for is to help senior dogs without adopting one themselves, than the Grey Muzzle Organization also gives out grants once a year to non-profit organizations focused on helping senior dogs.

There is still a bark in an older dog, and why not let that older dog bark and lick and enjoy life with a new owner this month in the District instead of spending the time in a cage in a shelter waiting to die. This is not a time for violins, just a time for action, to save some senior dogs from loneliness, boredom and a lack of cuddles.

Endangered Asiatic Lion Rescued From Well

An endangered Asiatic lion was rescued by forest officials after it fell into a 60-foot deep well on a farm in Amrpur village in India, according to The Indian Express.

The 8-year-old male lion was roaming the property of Badhabhai Rabari at night when it slipped into the open well filled with water. The animal treaded water until forest officials could lower a rope bed into the water for it to stand on. Then, somehow officials managed to get two ropes around the animal and pull it out of the well and into a cage. Caters News Agency has video of the rescue:

Iranian Dog Owners Face 74 Lashes if They Take Their Dog For A Walk

Dog owners could be arrested and subjected to 74 lashes if they are caught taking their pet for a walk or keeping one in their home under a proposed Iranian law.

A bill presented by 32 members of the Iranian Parliament claimed that owning a dog as a pet harms the country's Islamic culture because of their 'uncleanliness'.

Violators could be arrested if they are caught accompanying their pet in public and forced to pay a fine of up to 100 million rials, around £2,243, or RECEIVE 74 lashes.

You Won't Believe Where This Guy Drove His Car to Rescue a Dog (Video)

If you saw a dog stuck in the middle of a canal, what would you do? Climbing down to get the dog might be one way to go, but how would you climb back up the steep walls while holding the pooch? Quite the conundrum. To this kind individual, however, the answer was simple: drive your car into the canal!

We’re not joking. This person saw the dog in need, jumped in their jeep and set out to save the day. We can’t imagine how the car got into the waterway … but we have to hand it to them, the drive-by rescue is pretty impressive. How cool would it be if every animal rescue involved a bright orange jeep that would magically appear and swoop the animal in need off to a better life? That would make for a great animal-rescue hero movie.

We just love seeing people going to extreme lengths to help out our fellow sentient beings. Our hats go off to you Orange Jeep Man (okay, maybe for the movie he’ll get a better name).

When This Man's Girlfriend Gave Him An Ultimatum, He Chose The Dog

From dividing up belongings to moving out of a shared apartment, breakups can be tough. But what do you do when you have a furry friend to further complicate matters?

For Scott Ladauti, the decision was easy. When it came to choosing between salvaging his relationship and keeping his dog, he didn’t hesitate.

"When [my girlfriend] gave the ultimatum, it really wasn’t a question," he told HuffPost Live host Nancy Redd. "I lived in my car for, like, four days with my dog before my parents would let us come back to their house. But I would have been homeless with her forever."

Discovery Special to Air Man Eaten Alive by Anaconda

 (WXIA) -- The story started making the rounds on the Internet late Tuesday, but many people were skeptical. A new promo released by Discovery on Wednesday seemed to erase all doubt.

The network will present a special, "Eaten Alive," on December 7, featuring naturalist and filmmaker Paul Rosolie wearing what the network calls a "custom-built snake-proof suit" and allowing himself to be eaten by an anaconda.

The other day I was walking my dog when I walked past the most gorgeous coat in the window of Anthropologie. It was pouring rain. Of course, I didn’t want to tie up my pup… but then, a retail miracle occurred! It turns out that Anthropologie is a dog-friendly store! Which got me thinking, what other stores also welcome canine shoppers? So here it is: the ultimate list of national stores that are dog friendly! Petco and Petsmart were left off in favor of stores with slightly more obscure dog policies (but don’t worry! you can still bring your dog into them!)

More than 160 “active shooter” events have occurred across our country since 2000. The trend is increasing nationally, which now averages more than 11 active shooter incidents per year. In light of a recent arrest, where the Baltimore County Police Department prevented another such tragedy, the Prince George's County Police Department wants to share the below video with the community. It contains critical, potentially life-saving advice on how to react if a gunmen opens fire in a public place.

"Run. Hide. Fight. Surviving an Active Shooter Event" is a Department of Homeland Security Grant Funded Project, produced by the City of Houston Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security.

Scott Giacoppo, Vice President, External Affairs with Gracie

Scott Giacoppo joined the Washington Humane Society in November of 2007 as Chief Programs Officer. In 2010 he was also named Vice President of External Affairs responsible for the organization’s marketing and communications. In his roles Scott oversees the field officers for the District’s Animal Control Department as well as the Humane Law Enforcement Officers that investigate animal cruelty. Scott also supervises the WHS Humane Education Department in addition to the advocacy and wildlife programs. Prior to coming to WHS he served as a special state police officer investigating animal cruelty, as well as Director of Public Relations and Deputy Director of Advocacy for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Boston. Scott lives with Gracie, four wonderful cats and a Collie mix named Brady.

Tinder for Pets App Helps You Give Shelter Animals Forever Homes

This new addition to the growing number of Tinder-like apps out there is possibly the cutest one yet -- it lets you browse dogs, cats and other animals in shelters looking for their forever home.

The Tinder for pets we're talking about was developed by adoption website AllPaws, which isn't new to taking cues from dating services. In fact, the website itself looks more like online dating portals instead of traditional pet adoption haunts on the web. Just like Tinder, you need to swipe left or right to browse through contenders and message a shelter through the app when you find one that tugs at your heartstrings.

The app lists 200,000 adoptable animals at the moment, and while we can all look at dog and cat pics all day, you can also filter them based on breed and on your geographical location to easily find viable candidates.

Of course, nobody should ever adopt pets based on looks alone, but apps like this help entice people to go to shelters -- many might even end up going home with another dog or cat than the one they originally wanted. You can now download the AllPaws app from iTunes and finally find someone who'll love you more than you love him/her.

Never Buy A Teacup Pig

“Teacup pigs” (also sometimes sold as “micro pigs,” “pocket pigs” and “Juliana pigs”) are a marketing scam reaching back at least two decades, if not more. It works like this: Breeders put up listings for “teacup pigs,” promising to sell petite porkers a pig that’ll stay permanently tiny. Buyers then pay anywhere from $750 to over $3,500 for their teacup pig. The buyer then watches as that tiny pig becomes a larger adolescent pig, then a very large, very non-teacup-sized hog. Giant Anaconda Terrifies Woman In Boat

Boaters in South America chase an enormous anaconda down the river, grabbing its tail. Listen as the woman (the wife of the boat driver) screams in terror! The gigantic snake didn't fight back because it has just eaten. The boaters were fined after wildlife officials viewed the video.

Why Did the Cat Sit in the Circle? No Idea, Say Dumbfounded Vets, But This is One Trick That Even the Stupidest Pet Can Pull Off

If you've spent hours patiently trying to teach your puss to perform tricks then the latest online pet craze could be one for you.

Cat Circles, where cats are drawn to a makeshift circle, sit down in the middle of it and then refuse to move, are being recreated all over the world by plain old moggies who seemingly can't pass by a circle without being irresistibly drawn to it.

Hundreds of web users, mainly on Reddit and Imgur, are posting pictures of their successful feats, while vets and pet psychologists remain stumped.

Shelter Pets More Popular Than Ever

Getting a new dog or cat? Over sixty percent of people planning on bringing home a new pet say they're going to adopt.

The PetSmart Charities 2014 U.S. Shelter Pet Report finds that 66 percent of people considering bringing home a new pet say they would adopt their new furry friend instead of going to a breeder or other source. That's up from 58 percent in 2011.

Spaying and neutering is also on the rise. Eighty-six percent of pets are now spayed or neutered, up from 80 percent in 2009.

Put those figures together with increased pet ownership -- the report finds 81 percent of households now have a cat or dog (or both), up from 60 percent in 2009 -- and they amount to a real boon for homeless pets.

Virginia Rescue Organization Taking in Dogs from Thailand

Chantilly, Va. (WUSA9) -- A local animal rescue organization is preparing to bring five dogs from Thailand to the D.C. area.

According to A Forever Home Rescue Foundation (AFH), volunteers will bring four of the dogs to the U.S. Another dog will follow with a flight volunteer on Nov. 23.
