46 Dogs Where Flown to New York from South Korea After Being Rescued from Farm Where They Were to be Killed for Human Consumption
The Humane Society International is responsible for saving the dogs that were fed barely enough to survive.
The animals arrived at Kennedy International Airport late Saturday and were headed to emergency shelters in New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania on Sunday.
The farm in Goyang, a city just north of Seoul, "was more like a dungeon, where there's very little light, little to no ventilation, so the stench of ammonia would bring tears to your eyes when you walk through," said Kelly O'Meara, who oversees the society's companion animal-related international projects. "You'd see eyes peering at you, but it was hard to actually see the dogs themselves in the dark."
An estimated 17,000 other such farms still operate in South Korea, said O'Meara. However, she said, it's a diminishing industry in a society where demand for dog meat has been plummeting. Meat from about 2 million dogs still is eaten there each year.
In the United States, the rescued dogs will be available for adoption after the shelters evaluate their behavior and medical needs and make sure each one is ready for a new life in someone's home.
In South Korea, O'Meara said, the dogs receive no veterinary care of any kind.
"They either get through it or they die in their cage and they receive just enough food to get by," she said.
At the seven farms from which the Humane Society rescued more than 800 dogs since 2015, those to be slaughtered included both mixed breed dogs and purebred ones — from a Chihuahua and a Maltese to various spaniels and a Saint Bernard.
A German shorthaired pointer and a miniature pinscher came from the latest farm.
The Washington-based Humane Society International, which relies on private donations, deals directly with farmers to close down and demolish dog meat businesses and help owners financially to transition to other work.
The animals must be taken abroad, O'Meara said, because they're generally not wanted in South Korea as pets or companion dogs. Some had been abandoned pets, and others were raised to be sold as pets but given to the meat industry if that failed.

Due to several confirmed cases of Feline panleukopenia virus, we are temporarily suspending cat adoptions at both adoption centers.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we are taking steps to contain potential exposure to panleukopenia in our shelters,” said Dr. Elysia Branson, DVM, Humane Rescue Alliance veterinarian. “These precautions include suspending adoptions temporarily and quarantining our cat population. This is a dangerous disease for cats, especially those who are very young, and we want to make every effort to contain the virus. Panleukopenia is something that we—and most animal shelters—have experience with and our team is taking every precaution to keep our animals safe.”

I shared a house with over FIFTY other cats previously, so I'm used to having feline friends. However, since my last owner had so many cats, it was difficult for her to spend time with all of us, so I'm still working on getting used to being petted and held. Mourek here! I'm sorry to say that I've bounced around quite a bit in my life. I originally was adopted out from a shelter in Virginia, but was recently brought here to the Humane Rescue Alliance when my previous owner could no longer care for me. I was previously living with a large family that included children and 2 other cats, and I just don't think that was a good fit for me. I think I would prefer to go to a quieter home. Will My Dog Be Ok If I Adopt Another?

Your first responsibility is to your current dog. After all, you don't want to put him in a situation he'll hate or be miserable in. If Rover is a quiet, old dog, don't bring home a hyper teenage dog who will drive him crazy. When adopting from a shelter, always find out the past history of the new dog. If he was abused or has a dominant character, this might create problems with your doggie back home. Is Rover a high-energy, always-running pooch? Then getting a companion with the same level of energy could be great -- they can play together and tire each other out.

National Dog Day
National Dog Day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure. Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day...for personal protection, for law enforcement, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and pulling victims of tragedy from wreckage, now they're detecting cancer and seizures...things even humans cannot do.
National Dog Day is against any kind of "breed ban". Dogs should not have to lose their lives because of the atrocities they have been forced to endure at the hands of man. And while we feel that American's have the constitutional right to purchase a pure breed dog, we strongly discourage buying dogs from pet stores supplied by puppy mills, backyard breeders, the internet and newspaper ads. Rather, we encourage those seeking new canine companions, to consider choosing adoption first. If you'd like a pure breed dog, look into a pure breed rescue in your city, to see if they might have some little furry soul just waiting to make your life complete. Another great place to find a new best friend is at large chain pet stores that host adoption drives for local shelters and rescues.

Silverdale, Washington - The Kitsap Humane Society, Puppuccino Pals Program Treats a Dog a Week at Starbucks: To Help Them Get Adopted
The Puppuccino Pals program was established in April at the Kitsap Humane Society in Washington. Every Tuesday, volunteer Molly Clark takes one of the shelter's dogs to the local Starbucks for a delicious Puppuccino. (It's on the chain's "secret menu" and is just a small cup filled with whipped cream.)
Not only does the dog get to take a break from the shelter and enjoy a car ride and a treat, the Starbucks also posts signs telling customers about the dog of the week, in hopes that they might decide to adopt him.
Even though the program was officially established in April, Clark has been taking dogs out for Puppuccinos to give them a break from shelter life for quite some time.
"The dogs LOVE the shelter breaks, and they adore the Puppuccinos," Kimberly Cizek Allen, events and outreach assistant coordinator at the Kitsap Humane Society, told The Dodo. "You can see it in their little eyes as they lick the whipped cream out of the cup."
Even if a dog might not be a good fit for a Puppuccino outing, the shelter makes sure that they still get their treat — and the exposure.
"Should a dog not be suited for an outing due to some type of limitation, Molly will take another dog on an outing, and bring a Puppuccino back," Allen said. "That way the Puppuccino Pals dog can enjoy play yard time, or quiet room time, or whatever is most appropriate and still be featured in our program!"
The shelter also features each Puppuccino Pal dog on its Instagram account, to give them a little extra attention.
The Puppuccino Pals program is a great way to get shelter dogs out in the community, and to remind people as they grab their daily coffee that hundreds of amazing dogs are still waiting, every day, for the right home.

170 Animals Adopted During Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League “Clear the Shelters’ Event Saturday, July 23rd
WHS-WARL teamed up with NBC4 to host NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations’ Clear the Shelters second annual nationwide pet adoption drive, which featured fee-waived adoptions to qualified families.
“We were absolutely thrilled with the turnout and success of Clear the Shelters 2016,” said Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO for WHS-WARL. “In just one day, we changed the lives of 170 families by finding homes for these wonderful animals that – in most cases – have simply been unlucky so far in their lives. We want to thank NBC4 for their outstanding support for this event and we look forward to next year!”
Interest in the event was evident in the hours leading up to Saturday. Potential adopters began lining up outside of the shelter at 11:00 p.m. Friday night, with customers patiently waiting for the doors to open the following morning in hopes of finding a new, furry family member. Hundreds of potential adopters visited the organization’s two shelters throughout the day. The final count for the day included 68 dogs, 97 cats, and five small animals adopted from WHS-WARL during Clear the Shelters.
While WHS-WARL is celebrating the success of Saturday’s event, the sobering reality remains that the population of pets needing homes at the organization’s two shelters will steadily rise again over the coming days. WHS-WARL encourages those that did not adopt on Saturday to consider adopting a homeless pet in the near future.

Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League: Clear the Shelter Event Was a Huge Success – Take a Look at the Video
When I arrived at the center on Olglethrope Street, NW, the event had already started. The first thing I noticed was a long line of people waiting patiently in 98% heat. As I entered the shelter, There were people everywhere. The atmosphere was really nice, children pointing out animals to their parents, staff showing animals, and adopters filling out paperwork.
I decided to first get pictures of some of the animals in their cages before they were adopted. I noticed that there was not a lot of barking. I can’t help but wonder if they knew what was going on and were on good behavior. Most of the cats\kittens were laid back sleeping, except for these two adorable kittens who put on a show for me. They were eventually adopted.

I noticed the NBC4 Washington table/tent and went over and spoke to them. They were busy taking videos, pictures and interviewing people. They were really nice people, and very professional.
I met some wonderful people:
As I walked around taking pictures and talking with people, I walked towards a family in the hallway and noticed that the dog was propped up on the cage, nothing unusual about that, they all do it. As I started to pass them, I looked down and saw a little girl rubbing, patting and talking to the dog. I usually ask if I can take a picture but decided not too for fear that it would draw her attention away from what she was doing…and besides the dog loved it! I felt there was a connection there. Later I was outside taking pictures of people leaving with their new pets. I looked up from taking this one picture and realized that it was the little girl’s family, and yes, they adopted the dog.
It was hot outside, and I had just entered the building when this same lady came up to me with the dog on a leash and paperwork in her hand. She had the biggest smile and said, “I got her.” I congratulated her, and then she asked if there was a back door for her to go out of. I asked her why and she told me again, that she did not want the news people to take her picture or put her on television. I had her wait inside and I went outside and expressed her wishes to the news media, and of course, they complied. I watched her as she walked away with her new pet. It looked like they had been together for years. The dog was not pulling or jumping, and walked right beside her.
I later noticed a couple with a big dog sitting on the floor. The dog was so happy, he was jumping all over the place. He was definitely excited about going to his new home. I stopped to speak with them and found out that they had arrived at the shelter around 11:00 p.m. the night before. They wanted to be first in line. Unfortunately, I did not get names of the adopters or the animals as they left. They were coming out of the building so fast.

I also met two people who adopted senior cats. I love it when senior animals are given a second chance to live out the rest of their lives in a loving home.
I left around 2:30 p.m., and headed down to the other center located on New York Avenue. I entered the shelter to find out that most of the animals had been adopted earlier in the day. I did however, get to see two dogs and a cat leaving for their forever homes.
At the end of the event, the shelter was cleared and a total of 170 animals were adopted including 68 dogs, 97 cats and 5 small animals.
While this years ‘Clear the Shelters” event is over, please don’t let that stop you from adopting. Yes, the shelters are clear for now, but they will fill up again. If you are looking to add a new furry family member, please don’t buy one. Consider visiting your local animal shelter and save two lives. When you adopt and animal, you leave a space for another animal to enter the shelter.

The Film ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ Has Some Pet Retailers Cashing In
The film ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ (CMCSA) opened with a massive $103 million dollar opening weekend, crushing expectations.
While the film might be a cash cow though for Universal Studios, pet retailers can expect to cash in on the animal themed film.
After the release of films like ‘101 Dalmatians’ and ‘Finding Nemo’ there was a spike in Dalmatian and Clown fish purchases. Animal shelters and adoption agencies interviewed by FOXBusiness.com advised that they don’t expect to see a spike in adoptions or animal purchases based on the various animals in the film, but that that could change over time.
PetSmart collaborated with the film on a special collection of dog toys, beds, and clothes among many other items.
According to the pet retailer, the best selling product are the Buddy Bungee Toy, Max and Buddy plush toys and the Gidget Ruffle Dress. Max plays the lead role as a Jack Russell Terrier, Buddy is an easy going Dachshund and a friend of Max’s, and Gidget is a Pomeranian with romantic intentions for Max.
Rebecca Frechette, the Senior Vice President of Merchandising at Petco says that the pet merchandising market is strong and fashionable items like travel supplies and collars have been trending well.
She also notes that consumers have a high interest in adopting pets. “People really want to help pets and make them a part of their family” Frechette tells FOXBusiness.com.

Maryland SPCA: "I CHOOSE YOU!" Adoption Event is This Weekend - Adoption Fees Waived for Adult Pets – July 16th and 17th
This weekend we will be waiving adoption fees for adult pets when you say the code-word "Pokemon".
Our hours for adoption on Saturday and Sunday are from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Pet visiting hours end 15 minutes prior to close.
Standard adoption procedures apply including the $20 pet ID Package. The package includes a microchip, engraved name tag, Baltimore City License, and collar.
