These Amazing Pups Would Like To Remind You It's 'Adopt A Shelter Dog Month'

The details of how these 52 dogs came to be available for adoption are varied, inspiring and sometimes tragic.

Sophie, it's thought, was used as a breeding dog, later abandoned in an attic with a litter of pups. Caliber is one of 26 dogs rescued out of a dogfighting ring in Apopka, Florida.

Sweet Kit was found running about as a stray in Washington, D.C. And someone -- we can't imagine who would do this -- left precious little Columbo in a box at a gas station in Indiana.

He just wants to play.

Despite Losing Her Life To Violence, 6 Year Old Catherine Hubbard’s Dream Lives On - 'Catherine’s Rescue Barn'

We all recognize that tragedy is a part of life, but some events are nearly unspeakable and impossible to understand. In 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School was the victim of one of the most appalling acts of violence this country has seen. The facts have been well documented, and the years have done nothing to make sense of what happened, or made it any less horrific.

One of the victims was Catherine Hubbard, a first grader, and an animal enthusiast. Her passion was animals, both real and stuffed. When she met an animal, regardless of fur, slime, scales, or size, she would ask it to “tell all your friends I am kind.” She wanted all animals to know she wanted to be friends with them and protect them. In kindergarten, Catherine made herself business cards for “Catherine’s Animal Shelter,” and listed herself as “Care Taker.” Despite being so small, she managed to dream bigger than most adults.

Bears Are on the Ballot in Maine as Hunting Methods Are Debated

It has been a big year for bears in the news, especially in Maine, where voters on Nov. 4 face a question that has bedeviled other bear-heavy states: how to keep the species’ population at bay in the face of pressure from animal rights groups lobbying to ban certain hunting methods.

The campaign around the Maine Bear Hunting Ban Initiative, which will appear on the ballot as Question 1, has shed light on Maine’s unique status in the wildlife world. It remains the only state in the lower 48 where hunters may use bait, traps and dogs to nab bears.

Deadly Spider Found in Family's Bananas

The last thing you'd expect to find lurking in your bananas is a creature whose Greek scientific name means "murderess."

But that's exactly what one London family found after a grocery delivery from the Waitrose supermarket chain, the Daily Mail reports. The family patriarch (known only as "Tim") was unloading the groceries when he spied the venomous Brazilian wandering spider—the world's most dangerous arachnid, LiveScience reports—and panicked, dropping the bananas into a bowl and trapping the spider by one of its legs.
