Goliath Encounter: Puppy-Sized Spider Surprises Scientist in Rainforest

Piotr Naskrecki was taking a nighttime walk in a rainforest in Guyana, when he heard rustling as if something were creeping underfoot. When he turned on his flashlight, he expected to see a small mammal, such as a possum or a rat.

"When I turned on the light, I couldn't quite understand what I was seeing," said Naskrecki, an entomologist and photographer at Harvard University's Museum of Comparative Zoology.

Dog Suffers from Rare Allergy to Humans

We've all heard of people being allergic to pets. But what about a dog that's allergic to people?

Meet Adam, a black lab who has a severe medical reaction to human dander.

The sick pup was dropped off at the Lucky Dog animal shelter in Indiana.

Staffers changed his diet and gave him special baths but couldn't figure out what was wrong until a blood test revealed his unique condition.

All thanks to the diagnosis, a custom treatment might be coming soon.

"The vet seems to think we can fix him, they put a serum together just like with kids allergies and he starts on allergy shots this week," said Robin Herman from Lucky Dog shelter.

In the meantime, Adam will continue to live at the Lucky Dog shelter.

They're accepting donations for his care.

25 Images That'll Make You Never Want to Wear Animals

Most of the world’s leather comes from India, where animal-protection laws are blatantly ignored. Cows like these are forced to march for days to their own slaughter, and they do so without food, water, or medical attention.

In India, it’s illegal to slaughter calves or milk-producing cows—but this, like so many other laws, is often disregarded.

'Bait Dog' Lucky To Be Alive: 3-Month-Old Faces Tough Recovery

It is a miracle this puppy is still alive.

Veterinarians suspect he was used as a "bait dog" for dog fighting, because of the severity of his injuries to his head and neck.

Fortunately Home at Last Dog Rescue saved this little guy from a Philadelphia high kill shelter where he'd been dropped off.

The puppy was rushed to a Norristown Veterinary hospital, where it was touch and go with the dog clinging to life.

It's hard to believe anyone could hurt this sweet little puppy. At just 3-months old, he's got a face that melts your heart.

"It's amazing that he's alive. The injuries to the top of his head have taken the muscle off all the way down to his skull so his skull is visible right now," said Dr. Tim Schwab of VMD Metropolitan Veterinary Associates.

His wounds are too graphic to show, the bandages hiding the horror of dog fighting.

Surgeon Tim Schwab suspects he was used as a bait dog.

"He was attacked by a dog that could open his mouth at least this wide because it looks to be one major bite if not two in the same area, so it was definitely a big dog with a lot of jaw power," said Schwab.

Chrissy Cutulli of Home at Last Dog Rescue is part of the team that saved this pup from a high kill shelter, Sunday night. The dog was near death.

"It was a hard 24 hours to know what was gonna happen," said Chrissy, "He's probably the worst case we've ever seen."

Chrissy is fostering the puppy, who they've name Max, until he is well enough to be adopted.

Sadly that could take months and multiple surgeries.

"It breaks my heart. Totally breaks my heart to see him in that much pain and that he's you know only three months old, somebody could do that to him." Said Chrissy.

This dog lover and life saver, brings Max to the vet every day to have his bandages changed and his meds checked, so his wounds can continue to heal.

"It's a labor of love," said Chrissy.

And the payoff is priceless for all those involved in giving this little guy a second chance at life.

"I see him being a happy family dog," she said.

"He's a beautiful dog and he has a great personality. I mean to have such severe wounds," said Schwab, "He is just happy and sits and wags his tail, licks your face, and is just happy to be alive."

Max's medical expenses are expected to run well over $10,000

Home at Last Dog Rescue, is completely volunteer and runs totally on donations.

The rescue has set up a go fund me account to cover max's veterinary care. If you would like to help out, or get involved with the organization visit the links below.

Ebola: The Wildlife Connection

Ebola, stemming from the depths of West Africa, spanning the oceans, now creeping into the U.S. What does Ebola have to do with wildlife? Everything. 75 percent of recently emerging infectious diseases affecting humans are diseases of animal origin.

It is contracted through contact with infected wildlife, i.e. through handling of or ingesting of infected animals. Chimpanzees and bats are the animals most often cited as carriers, but they are not the only animals.

Baby Chicken Finally Nods Off After Surviving Horrible Highway Accident

When a young baby chicken fell off a livestock truck on her way to New York, she fell out of the frying pan and into the fire. Once destined for a slaughterhouse, she was now left to die by the side of the highway.

But luckily, things took a welcome turn for her and dozens of other chickens who fell off the truck. Officers from NYC Animal Care & Control rescued them from the Staten Island Expressway and quickly brought them to the New York Shelter of the organization Farm Sanctuary.

According to staff, when this chicken in particular arrived, she was traumatized and unable to sleep. Now, the bird, named Jane, is so relaxed that she can fit in a snooze anytime. And in case you were unaware, the sound of a chicken snoring — snuckling? — is real and absolutely perfect:

It’s important to note that tens of thousands of animals are killed or injured in U.S. highway accidents each year while being transported by the meat industry. At the same time, some 9 billion chickens are slaughtered each year in the U.S. for food.
