This is a sickening story I'd rather not repeat, but there's an important message in it, so I hope you'll bear with me.

The owners of a 1-year-old German Shepherd dog brought their pet into a veterinary clinic for incoordination (loss of muscle coordination) and circling to the left behavior.

The owners were honest in admitting the dog had been "disciplined" a few hours earlier by being suspended off the ground with a choke collar for almost a full minute. When the owner lowered the dog to the ground, the poor animal was panicked and soon lost consciousness.

Man Calls Animal Shelter Reporting That He Had Duck Taped A Feral Cat's Mouth That Had Gotten Into His Home

It's a story guaranteed to anger anyone with compassion for those who can not speak. A sweet, friendly cat was dropped off at the Humane Society of Forsyth County in Georgia with her four feet cruelly duct taped. The cat couldn't walk and trembled in terror as she tried to remove the tape from her paws.

The egregious story of animal cruelty began last weekend when the man called the shelter reporting a feral" and "vicious" cat had gotten through his car door into his house and was terrorizing his own cat. He told us that he had put "duct tape" over its mouth so it wouldn't bite him."

An agent told the man to remove the duct tape from the cat; she would not "tear him up" and if the cat was truly feral, he would not have ever caught the cat. The man refused and stated he would bring the cat to Animal Control. One hour later, the man showed up with the cat:

"Poor Ducky. Not feral, not vicious- actually very sweet but very scared. His four feet were wrapped in duct tape. He was terrified."

The authorities have been contacted and are investigating this evil deed. For now, Ducky is doing better, and is expected he will soon be available for adoption.

Richard Simmons Beloved Dog's Death Triggered Emotional Crisis

The death of Richard Simmons' dog played an important part in the depression that has turned him into a shut-in ... a dog he considered his child.

TMZ broke the story…Richard hasn't been seen in public for almost 11 months ... and the trigger was a looming knee replacement which shut Richard down professionally and socially.

Sources close to Richard tell us his Dalmatian Hattie died within days of his last public sighting back in January. Richard took the dog with him when he was out and about in L.A. and would often brag about her in his exercise classes.

Richard -- who never had kids of his own -- treated Hattie like a child. Richard had several Dalmatians and Hattie was the last survivor.

Richard had a deep bond with the dog, who was 17 when she died ... and it destroyed him.

Dog Hitches a Ride on the Outside of an Ambulance Transporting his Owner to the Hospital

A part-beagle named Buddy didn't wait for an invitation to see his 85-year-old master at a Texas hospital.

The dog hitched a ride on the outside of an ambulance transporting his owner, Mason County rancher J.R. Nicholson, to Fredericksburg.

Ranch hand Brian Wright said on Friday that he summoned the ambulance on October 26 when Nicholson started feeling dizzy.

The ambulance had been driving for about 20 miles before another motorist flagged down the driver to say there was a dog on the side step.

Dog Who Chewed Off His Own Foot to Escape is on the Road to Recovery

Rocky, an 11-month-old German shepherd, came alive when veterinarian Matthew Wheaton entered the room.

The pup, first timid and shy, tumbled over for a belly rub. Wheaton obliged. While Rocky licked his face, Wheaton checked the bandage covering the pup’s stump leg.

Wheaton concluded, based on ligature marks, the pup had chewed off his own foot.

Two Andean Bear Cubs Born at the National Zoo

An Andean bear has given birth to two cubs at the Smithsonian's National Zoo.

Zoo officials say the mama bear, 8-year-old Billie Jean, gave birth to the baby bears this week. Their father is a 21-year-old bear named Cisco.

Zookeepers are monitoring the new family via closed-circuit cameras to give them their space. That's so Billie Jean can quietly nurse and bond with her young.

Zookeepers say the cubs are just one of four Andean bear litters born in North America in nine years. Andean bears are considered a vulnerable species, with an estimated 2,000 left in the wild. FOLLOW US!

Washington, DC Area - This Rottweiler Mix Has Been Lost For Over a Year - Family is Devastated: Generous Reward for His Return - Have You Seen This Dog?

Havoc, a 5-year-old Rottweiler Mix has been missing since November 9, 2013. He was lost in the area of the Decarlia Reservoir at the boarder of NW Washington, DC and Bethesda, Maryland.

From His Family:

Havoc is a beloved member of the family, and we are devastated. It has been many tears and sleepless nights since our wonderful boy disappeared.  Havoc has been roaming Northwest, Washington, DC, since early November, 2013, as confirmed by k9 scent tracking teams. He is routinely seen, but to get him home, he must be kept in sight until Janet can arrive on the scene. It only takes a minute for Havoc to run off and disappear again. A generous award is being offered for his safe return.

Havoc is a 5-year-old neutered, mixed breed male. He is mostly black with tan-colored paws, muzzle and spots over his eyes. He weighs about 50 pounds and does have a microchip.

He is normally friendly, but after so long on his own, he's grown extremely frightened. He will run away if approached.

Role for White Rat: Unexpected Star on Broadway

The Broadway cast was less than thrilled when it found out who one of their fellow performers would be. It made them squeamish — not because of who it was but because of what it was.

They would be sharing the stage, it turned out, with a live rat.

“The idea of a rat was not exactly familiar to me,” said Alex Sharp, an actor who plays the leading role. “It was just a thing you see in the subway that has diseases.”

I remember with bone-chilling recall the interview I did with a woman who called herself Shelly. Shelley Lovett* went to the animal shelter with her husband to rescue a dog.

Little did she know, the dog she would adopt ended up rescuing and empowering her to take life and leash into her own hands.
