Why Do Cats Paw At Their Water Bowl?

We all know how our cats have their own funny and quirky personalities.  Some cats pounce more than others, while other cats jump in boxes.  And, then, some cats have to paw their water and stir it all around before they even drink it!  Why, in fact, do our cats’ paw at their water bowl?

Cats will sometimes paw at the water bowl to check the water levels

Your cat may use her paw to find where the water is in the bowl.  The close up vision of cats is much weaker than their long distance vision so when he or she is right in front of the water dish, she might not see the water level.  Therefore, by checking where the water starts and moving it will cause the water to ripple and splash. Once your kitty is satisfied where the water is, then he or she will commence.

Cats just want to have fun!

Cats like to play.  Moving the water with a paw may be one way a kitty keeps herself entertained. If your cat likes to do this, you might think of investing in a pet water fountain.  That way, you can keep your cat entertained and you won’t have to clean up all the water on the kitchen floor!

Your cat might be expecting moving water

If your cat regularly drinks from the sink, then he or she will expect water to move. So when water is still in a dish, it can be unsettling for you kitty who then feels the need to give it a whack or a push.

Signs That Your Cat Is Getting Older

If your cat is approaching the golden years, there are signs to let you know once they are reaching the homestretch of those nine lives. Although we love our cats dearly, sadly they are like humans who don’t live forever. Here are a few things to be aware of if your cat is getting older:

Getting up isn’t always so easy

As your precious kitty reaches their twilight years, it may prove difficult for them to get up as quickly as they once did. Allow them extra time to move about or help out by giving them a loving lift.

Gradual loss of appetite

This sign may be easier to spot if you have a kitty that always leaves their food bowl dry. The older your cat gets the lesser amount of food they will need to take in, so be on the lookout for a drop in weight as well.

Here, kitty kitty?

If your cat is truly getting older, that selective deafness they may have been practicing at times could take a turn to impaired hearing. As your cat ages so will all of their senses. This completely normal transition into a new stage of life may be a telltale sign for you as an owner.

Your social butterfly may start to retreat

Your cat may once have been the life of the party, but if they retreat to a safe place to hide every time visitors are present definitely take this as a sign. Cats that are older prefer peace and quiet as opposed to the lively lifestyle they may have once enjoyed.

Catching extra catnaps

Older cats require more sleep than younger cats do. As your cat approaches their senior years you may find them sleeping even more than normal.

They need you more than they used to

Cats are loyal to their loving owners, that’s for sure. As your cat gets up there in age you may find them becoming a bit clingy with a desire to be close to you almost whenever you’re around.

Not so high, please

With a slow decline in the senses also comes a steady decline in cat-like reflexes. The same cat that you may have once repeatedly told to “get down” may now have a hard time getting up. If kitty sleeps with you on your high bed at night, try investing in a cat ramp/step ladder to make getting on/off the bed easier for your aging feline companion.

Meet Piglet, The Adorable Cleft-Lip Kitty

The first thing you notice about Piglet is her nose. This dinky white kitty with black-and-gray accents suffers from a cleft lip, which gives her a certain resemblance to the A. A. Milne character of the same name.

She’s also experienced a turbulent start to life, but now this kitty is blooming into a champion for special needs cats.

Also, Snoop Dogg has Piglet’s back.
I’ll explain more on that one later, but for now let’s get to Piglet’s tale.

Piglet was originally part of a litter that was orphaned at just a few days old. Thankfully, two veterinary technicians stepped in and bottle-raised Piglet and her pals.

“She was a lot of work as a baby,” says a friend of the vet technicians, who’d shortly become become Piglet’s mom after becoming smitten with a picture of her. “Although she didn’t have many complications from her cleft, her litter was not very healthy.”

Recounting her first meeting with Piglet, her mom says, “She was mostly nose! Her eyes were closed, and her ears hadn’t stood up yet. The first time I met her in person was when she was about 1 and a half weeks old, and I immediately fell in love with her. She loved being held, and I thought her nose was extremely cute!”

While Piglet’s personality shone through from the start — and her mom describes her as “very social and loving” but also “adventurous and brave” — her cleft lip situation was cause to be cautious.

“So far there have not been any complications due to her cleft lip,” explains her mom. “We are lucky that her palate is 100 percent intact, and, despite having a unique nose, her breathing is completely normal.”

She adds that Piglet’s lower jaw is technically shorter than her top jaw, and that the disparity might cause some future dental issues, but for now it’s a case of “waiting to see how things develop as she grows.”

Helping Piglet’s cause is the fact that her mom is also a vet tech at a speciality and emergency hospital — so this little darling is going to be constantly surrounded by veterinary experts all keeping a close eye on her development.

Along with the interest of the local veterinary community, Piglet is also growing up in the public eye thanks to her burgeoning Instagram account.  With her social media profile blooming, she’s all about showing the world that “a physical difference is not a disability — cats with physical differences are unique and beautiful in their own way,” her mom says. “Just look at Piglet’s account and see how many people have embraced her unique look and love her little lip and nose!”

Along with her online following, Piglet has also picked up a fan by the name of Snoop Dogg — although in this case it’s not the rapper (who, incidentally, owns cats), but another feline living in her forever home.

“The majority of their interactions include Piglet play-attacking Snoop Dogg and stalking his tail,” says her mom. “Luckily, Snoop is very tolerant and just stands there and allows her to do it. Their relationship is like that of an older brother taking care of his little sister.”

Head over to Piglet’s Instagram account to follow her story.

Did You Know That Cats Use Cardboard Boxes for Stress Relief?

If you have a cat, or have even been around a cat, you know they have a propensity for trying to fit into spaces far too small for them. Many a box has been ruined by a cat with a misguided sense of her size. From shoe boxes to refrigerator boxes, cats zero in on cardboard and make it their own. The question is, why? Is it because they know how adorable it is? Or do they get a thrill from making sure we have to keep climbing over whatever random box they have made their home for the day? Well, science has finally (possibly) found the answer!

It turns out, according to a new study from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, that cats use boxes for stress relief. Researches took 19 cats that were new to shelters and gave 10 boxes, while the other 9 did not. Over a 14 day period, the felines with boxes showed far less stress on the Kessker and Turner Cat-Stress-Score (CSS), and adjusted to the shelter environment far better than their box-less cohorts.

Cats are also awful at resolving conflict. If you have more than one cat, pay attention to where they go after a squabble, or to avoid one. Chances are, they are hitting an enclosed space, most likely a box. Hiding out in them helps them ignore whatever is stressing them out. That’s assuming your other cats don’t try to follow into the same box.

Outside of stress relief, boxes also provide something every cat needs: extra warmth. Cats prefer to stay between 86 and 97 degrees Fahrenheit, about 20 degrees higher than the average temperature of homes. Since cardboard is such a great insulator, curling up in boxes helps them maintain their comfort temperature. The same goes for cats curling up in a sink, or in a corner of the basement when they are too hot. They don’t do it simply to be cute.

National Hairball Awareness Day - April 24, 2015

Hairball Awareness Day is a time to consider the grooming challenges of our purr-fectly aristocratic pets. Being beautiful and regal comes naturally to felines, but lots of personal grooming is required to maintain that exquisite superior look. Newborn kittens are groomed within inches of their lives by enthusiastic mother cats, and personal hygiene becomes an ingrained part of the cat’s daily routine ranking above everything except food. Ferocious grooming causes ingestion of fur, and sooner or later, in a most unbecoming way, the haughty, dignified feline will hack up a hairball.

Hairball Awareness Day is an invitation to be aware and to practice preventative measures to help kitty through this nasty process. Practice regular grooming with a pet brush to reduce the amount of ingested fur, and offer a vet-recommended diet for hairball prevention. Be aware that occasional hairballs are to be expected, but frequent hairballs could indicate a problem.
