Meet Jack the Donkey and His Girlfriend, Diane the Emu: Looking For Their Forever Home Together
The adorably odd couple, who are named Jack and Diane, bonded together on an abandoned farm and were miserable when they were separated.
Here’s a little story ’bout Jack and Diane.
Jack, a male donkey, and Diane, a female emu, are an unlikely animal pair who have fallen in love. And although the two lovebirds (lovedonkeys?) are undeniably adorable, their tight bond is creating an obstacle for a North Carolina animal rescue.
According to Jennifer Gordon, executive director of Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, the odd couple was discovered in “a very small pen together” on an abandoned farm in Kershaw, South Carolina, last week. Gordon told HuffPost that their extremely close relationship wasn’t apparent to rescuers at first, and the team decided to load Jack onto a truck before Diane.
“The emu went kind of crazy,” Gordon said. “She was sticking her head through the fences and we were worried she was gonna hurt herself.”
Gordon said she was a little worried about putting the two animals in a trailer together, but decided to try it and see what happened.
“As we got on the road, we looked back there and they were both laying down together and snuggled up.”
Once the duo arrived at the Indian Trail-based rescue, Gordon said they decided to pair Diane up with another emu.
But it was a big mistake.
The Charlotte Observer reports that Diane “got frantic,” according to Gordon. Jack “started crying” and “paced around like an expectant father.”
“The donkey did not want other donkeys around the emu and the emu didn’t like [her new mate],” Gordon explained to HuffPost. “So we just decided to keep them together and they were very happy.”
The Carolina Waterfowl Rescue is currently trying to find a permanent home for Jack and Diane together, but the task is proving to be difficult. They don’t want to split them up, but neither Jack or Diane get along with other donkeys or emus. Gordon also noted on Facebook that they “can’t be put in with other animals.”
Gordon said she’d prefer placing the two in a nonprofit sanctuary, but will consider private adopters if that doesn’t work out.
“It wasn’t easy trailering them and we don’t think it’s in their best interest to get moved multiple times all over the country,” Gordon wrote on Facebook.

Donkey Seems to be Smiling After Being Rescued from Flood Waters in Ireland
He certainly had every reason to express his delight at
being saved after becoming stranded in flood waters.
And this is the hilarious moment a donkey appeared to grin
after a rowing club member came to his rescue in Killorglin, County Kerry.
The animal escaped from his stable in the town in western
Ireland on Saturday night after stormy weather damaged the gate.
All smiles: Animal shelter founder Suzanne Gibbons with a
very happy donkey after he was rescued from a flooded field in County Kerry.
Taken to safety: A team of rescuers managed to get a rope
and buoyancy aid around the terrified donkey before towing him to land.
Safe now: The animal escaped from its stable in the town in
western Ireland on Saturday night after stormy weather damaged the gate.
On land: After receiving a call from his concerned owner,
Animal Heaven Animal Rescue issued an appeal for help in retrieving the donkey.
The male donkey was discovered stranded in a field the next
morning, surrounded by deep flood water - the results of a burst riverbank
nearby.
After receiving a call from his concerned owner, Animal
Heaven Animal Rescue (Ahar) issued an appeal for help in retrieving the donkey.
And it was answered by Mike Fleming, a member of Killorglin
Rowing Club, who joined together with a team of rescuers from the animal
shelter.
Assisted by Mr. Fleming and his boat, they managed to get a
rope and buoyancy aid around the terrified donkey before towing him to land.
An Animal Heaven Animal Rescue (Ahar) spokesman said the
donkey, which has been named Mike after his rescuer, is recovering at the
animal shelter while his stable is repaired.
Teamwork: The animal escaped from his stable in Killorglin
in western Ireland on Saturday night after stormy weather damaged the gate.
Waiting game: The rescue center said the donkey, named Mike
after his rescuer, is recovering at the shelter while his stable is repaired.
Nursed: A vet has seen the donkey, who has a small amount of fluid in one lung, and started him on antibiotics to prevent pneumonia.
Saying that he needs 'loads of TLC', shelter founder
Suzanne Gibbons added: ‘He is now dried with towels, eating a hot mash, all cozy
and warm.
“Our vet has seen him and started him on antibiotics to
prevent pneumonia. He has a small bit of fluid in one lung but our vet said he
will recover.”
Meanwhile thousands of people in Britain remain without
power in the aftermath of serious flooding following Storm Desmond.
Homes and businesses in the North West of England have been
devastated by record rainfall, and the extreme weather has claimed three lives.
The Met Office has issued a severe rain warning this week
as Northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland brace themselves for more
downpours.

12 Of The World’s Most Massive Animals
In America, we love everything that’s big. Whether it be our
trucks, our land, our drinks, or our burgers, there’s one slogan that we like
to live by: Bigger is better.

Whether it be a 300-pound snake, a 2-pound goldfish, or a pig that weighs as
much as a truck, we’re impressed by the biggest and best!

them have been confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records to be the

A Zoney, a Cross-Breeding Between a Zebra and a Donkey, Born at Crimean Zoo
A zoo in the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea has welcomed its latest arrival – a "zonkey", which was born after a lonesome zebra got intimate with a donkey.
Named Telegraph by keepers at the Taigan zoo park in southern Crimea, the foal's head and body are the solid brown of a donkey but his legs have the characteristic black stripes of a zebra.
Born last week, "Telegraph is very popular with visitors" who can watch him romping around with his mother, according to zoo director Oleg Zubkov.
Cross-breeding between zebras and other members of the equine family is not unheard of, although it is rare that the zebra is the mother.
But the breeding of zonkeys or other hybrids is normally frowned upon by the zoo community.
"Such things don't happen in civilized zoos, but can occur at private zoos or on farms," said Anna Kachurovskaya, a spokeswoman for Moscow Zoo.
"This sort of marketing is not justified or scientific ... zoos are for preserving wild species, that is one of their most important goals."
Zubkov said Telegraph's mother, who had not had a mate for a long time, was lonely and uncomfortable in her enclosure at the private zoo founded two years ago about 20 miles from Crimea's main city Simferopol.
"So on the advice of a zoologist we moved her in with several other hoofed animals and she really liked the donkey. As a result of their affection for one another we've gotten Telegraph," Zubkov said in an email to AFP.
Telegraph was named after a local newspaper which recently celebrated its fifth anniversary.
Russia seized the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in March in a move hotly contested by Kiev and the international community.
