Itty-Bitty Pit Bull Is Born With Cleft Palate Before Vets Find Excessive Fluid Around Her Brain

When Sasha the pit bull was born, she looked a little different than most pit bull puppies.

Born in early September, Sasha’s life was immediately in danger. She had a cleft palate and lip, and was unable to nurse from her mama.

Nurse practitioner Marie DeMarco had previously cared for sick kittens, so animal rescuer Courtney Bellew thought she was the perfect person to look after Sasha.

Marie absolutely fell in love with Sasha, but she knew she had a long battle ahead, reports BoredPanda.

Unfortunately, when Sasha was 6 weeks old, a vet discovered that she also had a brain condition, making her a little slower than other puppies her age.

Even though she’s already had her fair share of struggles, Sasha the pit bull isn’t giving up. This little munchkin is a fighter, and her spirit has warmed the hearts of people everywhere.

Trucker Drives 64 Shelter Pets Out Of The Path Of Hurricane Florence

51-year-old Tony Alsup hopes to open his own animal shelter one day. Until that dream becomes a reality, he is doing everything in his power to help dogs and cats affected by natural disasters.

It started when he learned about the overcrowding in Texas shelters after Hurricane Harvey. The truck driver from Greenback, Tennessee knew he had to help, but he could not transport animals in a semi-trailer.

“I thought, well what can I do?” Alsup told the Washington Post. “I’ll just go buy a bus.”

And the kind-hearted animal lover did just that! Alsup purchased an old yellow school bus for $3,200, removed the seats, and headed to Texas. Since then, he has been transporting pets out of disaster zones across the south. He even traveled to Puerto Rico to assist in animal rescue efforts after Hurricane Maria.

10 Silent Signs Your Dog is Depressed

While dogs can’t tell you exactly what they’re feeling, they can still show behaviors similar to human depression. If your vet has ruled out other health conditions, you might have a case of doggie depression on your hands.

What should you do?

Before you blame your dog’s behavior on depression, its vet will need to do a full checkup to rule out any other health issues that could be bringing your dog down, like pain or a thyroid problem. For instance, look for these 11 symptoms of dog arthritis. If everything else checks out, your vet will likely recommend giving your dog more exercise, a healthier diet, and extra attention to lift your pet’s spirits. As a last-ditch effort, a vet might prescribe one of the same depression medications humans would use, such as Prozac or Zoloft. “We don’t want all our dogs walking around on Zoloft if we don’t have to, and oftentimes we don’t need to,” says Dr. Nelson. “But if giving that little something to take the edge off helps them live a more comfortable life, there’s no shame in that game.”

Puppies Spread Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria In Recent Diarrhea Outbreak

Puppy poop gave 118 people diarrhea in a recent outbreak caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. Nobody died, but 26 people were hospitalized. And if the pet industry doesn’t change its puppy-peddling ways, these outbreaks could continue.

The CDC was first clued into the outbreak in August 2017, when the Florida Department of Health reported that six people had been infected with a type of bacteria that causes fevers, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea. By February 2018, the CDC discovered that more than 118 people in 18 states had been infected with the same thing: a bacteria called Campylobacter that’s usually linked to eating raw chicken or food contaminated by chicken juices.
