Choosing The Best Pet Lizard: 3 Types of Geckos

If you’re looking to add reptiles to your family, geckos are a great and popular choice. They’re ideal pet lizards for beginners. Not only are geckos interesting pets that are so unique looking—you might even say they’re adorable, but they’re also relatively low-maintenance. While there are 2,000 types of geckos worldwide, only a few are bred to be pets, and each has varying levels of care to consider when choosing the right one for you.

“Certain gecko species are relatively low maintenance and forgiving for new reptile owners, though they still need owners to do research to determine proper husbandry before coming home,” says Dr. Kristin Gill, DVM, at Blue Pearl Specialty & Emergency Pet Hospital in Sarasota, Florida.

And “all reptiles can carry salmonella as part of their normal gut flora,” she says, so always wash your hands after handling them.

To help, here is a primer on the three most popular types of geckos that make great pets and what you’ll need to properly care for them.

Some Pets May Enjoy Lounging Around All Day…Not Pringle, The Bearded Dragon

While some pets may enjoy lounging around all day, others are ready to take on the world — one task at a time. Meet Pringle, a cute bearded dragon from Melbourne, Australia.

His owner, Sophie Hayes, got him when he was a tiny one-month-old lizard, and discovered that Pringle is nothing like those reptiles who just like eating and sunbathing all the time. Pringle loves to be in front of the camera! He’s a natural model and you can see him posing with all kind of props without any problems.

Pringle is now 4 years old and has already got so famous that he even appeared on The New York Post! However, he remains a humble lizard who likes simple things like going for a walk, eating salads or playing video games. Even many presents from his owner can’t spoil this bearded dragon!

Plumber Pulls Live Iguana from Toilet in Fort Lauderdale, Florida Home

A Florida woman says she was having trouble flushing the toilet in her Fort Lauderdale home this past weekend. After failing to plunge the problem out, she called for professional help.

"I've never seen anything like this before," plumber Alisa Scott told ABC affiliate WPLG-TV. "This is the first time I pulled something like that out of a toilet."

Scott says she used her tools to reach far down into the toilet. What she began to pull out was still alive.

"To my surprise, I pulled out that large iguana," Scott said. "At first I thought it was a toy, and then it started moving around."

Iguanas are common in that part of Florida, but they aren't commonly found inside your plumbing.

Homeowner Lily Lindquist was sad when the iguana later died, she told WPLG-TV, but that's not the only reason she doesn't want something like this to happen again. She believes the iguana got into her home through a vent on her roof. She's now making it a priority to close off those vents to prevent another toilet surprise.

"I don't want to be there when an iguana flies out of the toilet or an iguana bites me when I'm trying to go to the bathroom," Lindquist told WPLG-TV.
