How Dogs Went From Wolves to Man’s Best Friend, According to Scientists

They loved us long before they looked domesticated.

By answering an age-old question about man’s best friend, scientists have figured out how wolves became the dogs we all know and love today. It’s pretty common knowledge that dogs are related to their wild canine cousins, but the new study lays out how the transformation occurred. Namely, it asserts that wolves became good boys behavior-wise before they started looking more like domesticated dogs than wolves.

12-Year-Old Boy Builds Dumped Disabled Puppy A Lego Wheelchair

When Gracie was just a newborn puppy, her – insert profanity here – owners threw her away like garbage. And as a result, when she was rescued, the poor thing was covered in maggots. She was also missing the hair below her eyes. Her rescuers also realized that she was missing her front legs as a result of a birth defect. No one could tell what hardships she’d faced in her young life, but they knew that Gracie was in for a tough fight.

Gracie was eventually adopted by the Turley family – a family who happen to run a shelter of their own. The family already had a paralyzed dog and a 3-legged Chihuahua, so sweet little Gracie seemed to be a perfect fit for the family. However, the Turley family worried about Gracie’s mobility since she was a growing puppy and wouldn’t yet be eligible for a wheelchair fitting.

Celebrity Dog Picasso Honored for Overcoming Tough Odds

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — With his famous misaligned snout and unique toothy grin, Eugene dog Picasso was honored in Portland with an Oregon Humane Society Diamond Collar Hero Award.

At almost 2 years old, the pit bull, Chihuahua and Pomeranian mix has captured worldwide attention since coming to Eugene in early 2017.

The Oregon Humane Society's Diamond Collar Hero Awards recognize and honor animals and people who have acted to save a human or animal life in peril, performed services within the community with undying loyalty, or overcome incredible odds in order to survive.

"Picasso has overcome challenges that most dogs don't ever have to, from surviving an assaulter to living on the streets," said Liesl Wilhardt, Luvable Dog Rescue founder and executive director. "And he's done it all with courage and grace."

Meet Coffee Bean, an Adorable 17- Year Old Rescued Chihuahua Who is Living His Final Years Checking Off His Bucket List

Lakeland, Florida – A Lakeland couple is making sure their 17-year-old rescued Chihuahua’s golden years are his best, experiencing the love every dog should, the love he missed out on during years of abuse and neglect.

Tiffany and Billy Hutto rescued Coffee Bean after he was left abandoned and abused on a street in Miami.

The Huttos have now created a bucket list for Coffee Bean and are determined to check off as many items as possible. Coffee Bean has met Miss Florida, walked on the beach at sunset, and had a massage, complete with a manicure and pedicure.

“I wanted him to know what it felt like to have unconditional love. So I decided, why not do ia bucket list,” his new mom Tiffany Hutto told WFLA.

Tiffany contacted the city hoping to fulfill a few more items.

Coffee Bean met City Manager Tony Delgado and was presented a “Bone to the City”.

A trip to the Lakeland Fire Department made this little dog’s day when he got to sit in a big fire truck.

Coffee Bean was also made an honorary K-9 for the day, with a badge placed around his neck by Lakeland Police Chief Larry Giddens.

“I would say perseverance. Leading that kind of life and still have the will to get up and go and live out 17 years is pretty Extraordinary,” Lakeland Police Officer and K-9 Handler Chad Whitaker said.

“We picked things around here that wouldn’t be so difficult to do, and wouldn’t tire him out. I think it’s helped him perk up because when we got him he was severely depressed,” Hutto said.

They found Coffee Bean two months ago at Pawlicious Poochie Pet Rescue in Pinellas County. The organization rescues dying, critically ill and old dogs.

According to the owner of the nonprofit rescue, Jaime Mcknight, Coffee Bean was a critical case. When he was rescued, she spent weeks at a vet clinic trying to save him when he originally arrived.

His new family has several dogs with special needs.

Hutto said she hopes to encourage other people to adopt animals with special conditions.

As for Coffee Bean, he still has more items to cross off his list.

You can follow Coffee Bean at his Facebook page.

46 Dogs Where Flown to New York from South Korea After Being Rescued from Farm Where They Were to be Killed for Human Consumption

New York - 46 dogs where flown to New York from South Korea after being rescued from a farm where they were to be killed for human consumption, animal advocates said Sunday.

The Humane Society International is responsible for saving the dogs that were fed barely enough to survive.

The animals arrived at Kennedy International Airport late Saturday and were headed to emergency shelters in New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania on Sunday.

The farm in Goyang, a city just north of Seoul, "was more like a dungeon, where there's very little light, little to no ventilation, so the stench of ammonia would bring tears to your eyes when you walk through," said Kelly O'Meara, who oversees the society's companion animal-related international projects. "You'd see eyes peering at you, but it was hard to actually see the dogs themselves in the dark."

An estimated 17,000 other such farms still operate in South Korea, said O'Meara. However, she said, it's a diminishing industry in a society where demand for dog meat has been plummeting. Meat from about 2 million dogs still is eaten there each year.

In the United States, the rescued dogs will be available for adoption after the shelters evaluate their behavior and medical needs and make sure each one is ready for a new life in someone's home.

In South Korea, O'Meara said, the dogs receive no veterinary care of any kind.

"They either get through it or they die in their cage and they receive just enough food to get by," she said.

At the seven farms from which the Humane Society rescued more than 800 dogs since 2015, those to be slaughtered included both mixed breed dogs and purebred ones — from a Chihuahua and a Maltese to various spaniels and a Saint Bernard.

A German shorthaired pointer and a miniature pinscher came from the latest farm.

The Washington-based Humane Society International, which relies on private donations, deals directly with farmers to close down and demolish dog meat businesses and help owners financially to transition to other work.

The animals must be taken abroad, O'Meara said, because they're generally not wanted in South Korea as pets or companion dogs. Some had been abandoned pets, and others were raised to be sold as pets but given to the meat industry if that failed.

SweePee Rambo, a Blind Chihuahua-Chinese Crested Mix Took Home the Win for the World's Ugliest Dog

For the past 28 years, dogs from around the globe compete for the title of the 'World's Ugliest Dog' and this year a blind Chihuahua-Chinese Crested mix took home the win for the unusual contest in California.

Jason Wurtz's dog named SweePee Rambo won the competition that aims to show the inner beauty of dogs that aren't aesthetically attractive for 2016 on Friday at the Sonoma-Marin County Fair in Petaluma.

SweePee, who has a blonde Mohawk, is blind in both eyes, and her right is blue.

The four-pound female dog has lived with her owner Jason for the past 17 years in Encino, California.

As a prize for taking home the title, the pooch who wears doggie depends because of old age, received a trophy and $1,500.

Wurtz told ABC News that SweePee was a gift to his ex-wife, but he took full ownership of her after they divorced because she though the canine was ugly.

This isn't the first time she competed in the competition. Wurtz said she has been in it three times in the past, but this is her first time winning top honors.
The runner-up and third-place winner of the competition also receive cash awards and special titles.

Each year since its inception, the contest looks to celebrate the 'homely hounds and the humans who love them.'

“We're proud to celebrate all dogs and pets by showing that no matter their imperfections, they are adoptable, lovable and a great add to any family,” said Erin Post, CEO of the Sonoma-Marin Fair, in a statement prior to the contest.

The event this year included a ‘Fashion Faux Paws Fashion Show' and a 'Beauty and the Beast Walk' that featured Miss Sonoma County court walking rescue dogs that were available for adoption down the catwalk.
Prior to the contest, Himisaboo became Internet famous after many, including his owners, compared the unique mop on his head to Republican Donald Trump's infamous hair.

Karen Spencer, marketing director for the event, said: “The dogs love it, they get so much attention, get petted, treats and are told how cute they are.
Some have unusual teeth, unusual hair, sometimes they are bulldogs who always look silly due to their bottom teeth, there's always a real variety.
Despite being in an ugly dog competition so many people tell them “you're so ugly you're cute”, it's all about their inner beauty.

We really work hard to show the world that dogs who have deformities or unusual characteristics are still very lovable and adoptable.”

They're still beautiful inside and often they are the dogs who struggle to find homes from dog shelters.

The judges look at the dogs, they look at their appearance but also at how the dog interacts with others and what kind of personality they have.
'Most owners of our contestants tell us they picked a dog that have been left in a shelter for a long period of time and because nobody wanted to adopt them.”

Last year, Quasi Modo, a short-spined dog from Loxahatcheee, Florida took home the coveted title.

The dog who looks like a hyena beat out 26 other dogs to win the contest.

A Family in Laguna Beach Says a Coyote Attacked Their Dog in Their Home

Los Angeles, California - A family in Laguna Beach says a coyote attacked their dog in their home.

Dog owner John Fischer says the coyote must've ran up the steps in his front yard to get inside his house and snatch his Chihuahua.

Fischer says when he heard the commotion in the middle of the night, he hurried down the hall and was stunned at what he saw.

"I saw him [the coyote] bolt and he definitely had something in his mouth, and it was white," Fischer told CBS Los Angeles.

The Fischer family's little white chihuahua Eloise was gone.

Surprisingly, this is not an uncommon story in the Laguna Beach area.

In the past, police have warned Laguna Beach residents to keep their small pets inside, after a series of small dogs were attacked by coyotes.

No matter what, Fischer says, pets in his neighborhood are getting attacked on a weekly basis and he is demanding the city step in to help.

"I'd hope that they'd be removed safely, but taken to where they belong," Fischer said.

"It's like two worlds colliding and it's just not working," he added.

Fischer says he will now keep his doors closed at all hours of the day, and is warning other residents to do the same.

We tried talking to animal services, but no one was available.

"We feel victimized at this point and it's to where I don't feel safe in my own house," Fischer said.

Family Sues ‘People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) for Euthanizing Pet Chihuahua

A family is suing People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals after workers for the nonprofit snatched a pet Chihuahua off their porch and killed it.

Wilber Zarate and his daughter, Cynthia, seek more than $9 million. They each sued the Norfolk-based animal rights group Tuesday in Norfolk Circuit Court for $2 million and are asking for $5 million in punitive damages. Zarate and his daughter also are suing PETA workers Victoria Carey and Jennifer Woods for $350,000 each.

A PETA official declined to comment on the suit Tuesday, saying the group hadn’t read it yet.

Carey and Woods went to the Zarates’ trailer park home in Accomack County in October 2014 and took the young girl’s 3-year-old Chihuahua, Maya, off the family’s porch, according to court documents.

Carey was a contract worker for PETA and had been the nonprofit’s human resources director. Woods is PETA’s senior communications administrator and had volunteered to go with Carey on her own time.

Maya was euthanized that day, but state law required her to be held for five days.

Cynthia was distraught after Maya was killed, Zarate said of his daughter in the lawsuit.

“She cried for weeks, became lethargic, lost sleep, refrained from eating and lost weight,” he said. “Maya was irreplaceable.”

Carey and Woods had come to the park before Maya was taken. The trailer park’s manager had contacted PETA after a group of residents moved out, leaving behind their large dogs, Zarate said in his lawsuit. The PETA workers developed relationships with residents and promised to find good homes for their dogs once they caught them.

A security camera shows two children trying to lure Maya off the porch, according to the lawsuit. When they fail, Woods plays lookout while Carey snatches the dog. Carey and Woods paid the kids to coax the Chihuahua, Zarate said in the suit.

Four months after euthanizing the dog, PETA admitted it euthanized Maya and apologized.

In February, Daphna Nachminovitch, a PETA senior vice president who oversees the team that was responsible for the euthanization, said Carey mistook Maya for another Chihuahua.

Zarate said Carey met Maya during one of her visits and promised to get her vaccinated, Zarate said in the suit, adding that she never did.

The state conducted an investigation and determined that PETA violated state law by failing to ensure that the animal was properly identified and failing to keep the dog alive for five days before killing it, according to the notice from the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Because of this “critical finding” and the “severity of this lapse in judgment,” the agency issued PETA the organization’s first-ever violation and imposed the largest fine allowed, $500.

“We were pretty devastated that this happened for obvious reasons,” Nachminovitch said after the investigation’s results were made public. “It shouldn’t have happened. It was a terrible mistake.”

PETA has made several changes to prevent such an incident from happening again, Nachminovitch said in February. Field workers who pick up animals now must complete a form to verify that all proper steps have been taken. Supervisors also must approve unscheduled “animal surrenders” in the field.

Carey’s contract was terminated, and Woods kept her job.

Dog Found Living Inside Tree Trunk Looking For 'Very Patient' Home

A tiny dog found living inside of a hollowed-out tree trunk now needs a “very, very patient person” to give her a forever home.

“She thinks the world’s out to get her,” Shirley Zindler, a Sonoma County animal control officer and the author of The Secret Life of Dog Catchers, told The Huffington Post.

Zindler said her department received a call a couple of weeks ago from a resident of a rural area in Sonoma County, California. The caller said that a small stray dog had been there for at least a week and appeared to be living inside a large tree. The tree was located near what Zindler described as “common dumping ground” -- place where people frequently drive to abandon their dogs.

Zindler said it took a few hours for her and other officers to coax the 7-pound, underweight dog -- which she described as looking like a “generic chihuahua” -- out of a knothole in the trunk. Another officer on the scene named the dog “Boo” after Boo Radley, the character in To Kill A Mockingbird who left gifts for children in a tree knothole.

Estimated to be less than a year old, Boo was pregnant, but none of her puppies survived.

Boo probably hasn’t had many positive interactions with humans, Zindler told HuffPost. As a result, she was very wary of people. Zindler said she is making progress, but “it’s very, very slow.”

Meet, Disney, Britain's Smallest Puppy…Just Three Inches Tall

Meet Disney, a pocket-sized Chihuahua, who was part of a litter of three born on January 25th, and hasn't grown since she was eight-weeks-old.

Standing at only three inches tall, and weighing less than a bag of sugar Britain's smallest puppy is so tiny she thinks she's a kitten.

She weighs just 14oz and can be carried around by owner Natalie Vanes, 26, in the palm of her hand.

The mother-of-one has to keep Disney away from her three other dogs at her home in Coseley, West Midlands, in case they mistake her for a toy.

As a result, Disney forged an inseparable bond with Ms. Vanes' pet kitten Kiera, and they have been best friends ever since.

Disney plays with kitten toys - as the dog toys are too big for her - and even pinches Kiera's food out of her bowl.

The pair also sleep together on a heat-mat in a special dog crate, which is kept in Ms. Vanes' bedroom, and can fit in a plant-pot together.

Ms. Vanes, who lives with her fiancé, Stephen, 30, and their five-year-old daughter, said, “Disney was a normal sized little puppy and was fed and reared by her mom, Tinkerbell, and didn't really need any special treatment.

“As time passed they both grew normally but they were quite small. However, their mom and dad are small so I wasn't too concerned.

Since then her brother has grown into a handsome boy weighing a little over 1 pound at 12 weeks, and Disney only weighed under a pound at 12 weeks.

That's when I realized how small she actually was. The unique thing about Disney is that she has never really grown since eight weeks old.

She is a normal healthy fun little puppy, full of energy, but just so tiny.

“I have to be careful when I take her out, I wrap her in a blanket because she gets cold, and there is no collar big enough to fit her.”

“She became best friends with Kiera, and they soon became inseparable. They stay by each other's side all the time. Disney plays with the tiny fluffy mice toys, as dog toys are too big and heavy for her.

She also enjoyed stealing Kiera's food, she thinks she’s a kitten and they snuggle up together all the time.”

Disney weighs the same weight as a five-week-old average Chihuahua, which currently makes her the smallest dog in Britain.

The current smallest dog in the UK is Tyson, a four inch, Lhasa Apso cross Chihuahua, who lives in Lincoln with owner, Rosemarie McLinden.

The world's smallest living dog is a female Chihuahua called Miracle Milly, who is 3.8in tall and weighs 1lb.

She sleeps in a doll's crib at her owner's home in Dorado, Puerto Rico.

The 14-week-old pup is on course to break a Guinness World Record for the smallest dog, if she continues to grow at the same rate, pictured with Summer Peters.

Disney only weighs the same weight of a five-week-old average Chihuahua, which currently makes her the smallest dog in Britain.

$1000 Reward Offered for Information Leading to the Arrest/Prosecution of Person(s) Responsible for the Chemical Burns and Abandonment of 8-Week-Old Puppy

Pittsburg, California  - The Well-Pet Vet Clinic in Pittsburg was packed with patients on Friday afternoon.

One of them had the name, Fireman. The little gray, tan, and white puppy was curled up in a wicker basket, he was sedated. "The dog is in an extreme amount of pain," said clinic nurse Beth Allen-Garland. "Someone did something really awful, it's either a severe chemical burn or somebody tried to light his ears on fire."

Fireman was found on Wednesday in the play area at Antioch Animal Services. The area is surrounded by a six foot tall fence and volunteers say they don't know who may have dropped him off, or how they were able to.

Kristy Keusch, one of the volunteers, decided to foster Fireman. Keusch says she can't figure out what caused the dog's injuries. "If he were to fall or stand in a chemical it would affect his paws, but his paws are not affected. I feel someone tortured him."

Keusch has teamed up with Umbrella of Hope, an organization that says it saved more than 500 cats and dogs from Contra Costa County shelters last year, to help in Fireman's recovery.

The Chihuahua mix will have to have his ears amputated due to the extent of his injuries. Beth Allen-Garland says Fireman should be able to live out a great life despite his injuries.

She also says a thousand dollar reward is being offered by Fido Alert for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. "You kind of wonder about the people walking among us willing to harm an animal, let alone a baby animal."

Fireman is hoping someday to find a loving full-time home. Umbrella of Hope says he could be up for adoption in four to six weeks.

Adoption Information

Message from Umbrella of Hope:

'We have had over 100 inquiries about him as of 6 p.m. on Friday, April 3rd, 2015. Due to the sheer volume on inquiries we have received already, we will be unable to respond to inquires asking questions on adoption inquiries until he is made available for adoption. We will post updates on Fireman (just like all of our animals) on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Umbrellaofhope  - please like our page https://www.facebook.com/Umbrellaofhope and follow us to ensure that you receive updates.'

** $1000 reward offered for information leading to the arrest/prosecution of person or persons responsible for the chemical burns & abandonment of 8 week old puppy outside of Antioch Animal Services between March 30th & March 31st **

This is Fireman, he is barely 2lbs of Chihuahua mix. He was found outside of Antioch Animal Services on Tuesday whining & wincing in pain. His body hurts when he moves. His nose hurts when he presses it to anything. His ears are flaking apart. He longs to be picked up, but it hurts. Someone brought him to the shelter whilst it was closed. Someone found him or someone didn't want him, but surely someone will recognize him or know of his litter mates. He was immediately pulled by a rescue & will be treated for his injuries, for his pain, his ears will have to be amputated, he will need a lot of emotional support too as he fears being touched in light of his pain, but we are confident he will pull through as he already has won over many hearts in a matter of days who are all hoping for justice for this little guy. Please share Fireman, someone knows something or someone, whether this was an act of cruelty, neglect or an accident, this little guy should not have been left alone in the middle of the night even if it was within feet of the shelter.

Our thanks to the staff & volunteers at Antioch Animal Services & to the care provided by Umbrella of Hope that will see Fireman healthy, healed & eventually in a home that will love him.
