Animal Welfare League of Alexandria Gives Dogs Second Chance After Hurricane Matthew: This Week Adoption Fees Have Been WAIVED

Alexandria, Va. — The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria took in six animals on Saturday from North Carolina after Hurricane Matthew swept through. Earlier in the week, the group took in three other dogs from South Carolina.

“It really does give you chills, the gravity of the situation really hits when you see such a large truck come in, the doors open, and so many beautiful faces,” said Abbie Hubbard, Deputy Director of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

86 animals in total filled a truck from North Carolina, the AWLA opened their doors to a half dozen of them.

“It’s hard to watch it from afar and not know quite what we can do,” Hubbard said. “So, then to be able to help in this situation, it means a lot.”

Your adoption of a dog today will be saving THREE lives in our #stormsurge event. The dog which you take today will finally have a home, which will make space for the transfers we receive from Carolina shelters, who then can turn around and save more displaced dogs in need of being rescued after #HurricaneMatthew.

This week adoption fees have been WAIVED (excluding holding fees). Come by today to meet some of our fantastic friends!

Washington Animal Rescue League: Dogs Once Suffering on S. Korean Dog Meat Farm Arrived in the DC Area - Media is Invited to Cover the Transfer of Dogs on Monday, Dec. 14

Washington, DC - Humane Society International rescue dogs and shut down fourth farm; partners with Washington Animal Rescue League and Washington, DC metro shelters to find dogs loving homes.

(Dec. 9, 2015) ― Twenty six dogs rescued from a dog meat farm in South Korea by Humane Society International begin arriving at the Washington Animal Rescue League on Dec. 11, on their way to new lives. Once the animals are evaluated by WARL staff, the dogs will be divided among them and four other Emergency Placement Partner shelters including the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Animal Welfare League of Arlington, Fairfax County Animal Shelter and Washington Humane Society to find the dogs homes. Emergency Placement Partners is a program of The Humane Society of the United States, HSI’s U.S. affiliate.

WHAT:       Media is invited to cover the transfer of dogs on Monday, Dec. 14 at WARL.

WHERE:    Washington Animal Rescue League, 71 Oglethorpe Street, NW, Washington,     D.C., 20011

WHEN:       Monday, Dec. 14 at 11:00 a.m. EST

WHO:
Robert Ramin, president and ceo of WARL
Kelly O’Meara, director of companion animals and engagement for HSI
Representatives from the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Animal Welfare League of Arlington, Fairfax County Animal Shelter and Washington Humane Society

Background:  HSI worked with the farm owner to remove the dogs from miserable conditions and close its doors for good. As part of the plan, he signed an agreement with HSI to shut down the property. HSI will follow the farmer’s progress to ensure compliance. HSI will demolish the cages once all the dogs are safely removed.

HSI is working to reduce the dog meat trade in Asia, including in South Korea where dogs are farmed for the trade – and where the 2018 Winter Olympics will be held. HSI will work with other dog farmers who agree to get out of the inhumane dog meat trade permanently and transition into trades like crop growing.

**Photos and video of the Korean dog meat farm, and their arrival at Dulles are available by request.

Media Note: Credentialed media interested in attending should RSVP to a contact below.

The Story of Fancy, An Adorable Chinese Shar-Pei/Terrier Mix, Found Dying in the Street - Rescued by Good Samaritans - Looking for a Forever Home

If you are following my blog, then you know I share a variety of animal stories. I want to share the story of Fancy, a very special dog, as she is very dear to my heart.

Her story:
June 13, 2014, was a very hot balmy day in Maryland. It was about 3:30 p.m., when I decided to look out of my front door.

As I looked out of the storm door, something caught my eye moving in the grass of the large apartment complex adjacent to my home. I stepped out on the porch to get a closer look, I spotted what looked to be a small dog crawling in the grass. I immediately called for my husband to come. As we walked over, I looked into the face of a sad little dog who looked to be in pain.

I grabbed my phone and called the Prince George's County Animal Shelter. While I was on the phone she continued to crawl further into the street and just laid down. My husband began directing traffic around her. I bend down crying, looking at her little body covered in mange. Her stomach was raw and red from scratching. She looked dehydrated, and hungry. I began talking to her and assuring her that I was not going to leave her. I will never forget her eyes, they were so sad.

Within 30 minutes, she was picked up by Prince George's County Animal Control.

I kept in touch with the animal shelter, getting updates on her condition. She received excellent treatment and was progressing very well.

I spend weeks contacting animal rescues across the country trying to get someone to take her. Pit Bull Mixes are illegal in Prince George's County. She could not be adopted out from the Prince George's County Animal Shelter, and could only be released to a rescue group.

On September 9, 2014, I received an email from the Prince George's County Animal Shelter staff telling me that, Fancy, a named that had given her, would be transferring to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, in Alexandria, VA.

She was being transferred because she would have a better chance of adoption at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. I continued following her progress with them as she was still on medication and doing really well.

I received an email today from a friend, at the Washington Humane Society, Washington, DC.  She was attending their Frisky Business Adoption Event this past Saturday. As she was looking at the dogs, she noticed one that looked familiar (she had seen Fancy's picture constantly posted on my facebook page). She decided to check, and found out that is was Fancy.

I was told that sometimes shelters swap animals, and apparently Fancy was chosen in a swap from the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria to the Washington Humane Society.

I am sharing Fancy's story to help get her adopted into a loving forever home. Fancy became the staff's pick in Prince George's County Animal Shelter, and even has a leash with her name on it! All shelters have told me that she is a sweet, adorable little girl that gives out plenty of puppy kisses!

Did I mention she loves belly rubs!

While I am a resident of Prince George's County and it would be illegal for me to adopt Fancy, I will continue to share her story to help her get adopted.

If you have room in your heart, and in your home for Fancy, please contact the Washington Humane Society, Please read: STEPS TO ADOPT

Fancy has been a busy girl, she walked with the WHS PACK (People & Animal Cardio Klub) group, and attended their Frisky Business Adoption Event this past Saturday.
