Sochi, Home of the Winter Olympics - City Hall Orders Killing of Stray Dogs

There hasn't been a glut of positive news out of Russia as the Olympic Games near, and that trend continued Monday with a disturbing report regarding Sochi's plan for stray dogs throughout the city.

According to the Associated Press, city officials have contracted a pest control company to "catch and dispose of" stray dogs roaming city streets throughout the games.

In short, the dogs will be killed.

Alexei Sorokin, the director general of the pest control company, told the AP that thousands of stray dogs are roaming about Sochi, and some of them are biting children. One dog, he said, made its way into an opening ceremony rehearsal.

"A dog ran into the Fisht Stadium, we took it away," he told the AP. "God forbid something like this happens at the actual opening ceremony. This will be a disgrace for the whole country."

The extermination of stray dogs in Sochi has been an ongoing issue, but city officials reportedly told activists that shelters would be built in time for the Olympics to house the animals. However, activists have told the AP that no such shelters have been built.

City hall has yet the speak on the matter.

Though he claims the animals are killed humanely, Sorokin showed little regard for the animals in an interview with ABC News last week.

"I am for the right of people to walk the streets without fear of being attacked by packs of dogs," he said. "Let's call things by their real name. These dogs are biological trash."
