Homeless Man Walks 5 Miles Every Day to Visit Beloved Dog

Picture of man walking dog
Every day, rain or shine, Pete Buchmann walks five miles to visit his best friend, Buster.

Buchmann and Buster were inseparable until July, when Buchmann's financial resources were depleted and he found himself homeless, with no way to care for his 9-year-old pet.

"When I couldn't pay my rent any more, I moved across the street into the backyard of an empty house," Buchmann said. "I pitched a two-man tent, and it was kind of fun for about a week, but it wasn't

Dog Chases Ambulance To Be With Owner

The outpouring of allegiance to a dog drew attention on the social networks this Christmas Eve: The dog followed his owner, a homeless man, up to a hospital and the attitude of the team from the fire department to stop the ambulance and welcome the animal, was seen as a good gesture.

The firefighters noticed, rearview mirror of the ambulance, that the dog was determined to follow the vehicle on the streets of De taguatinga, administrative region to 21 miles from the Centre of the federal capital.

The owner of him, according to the fire department, had suffered a epileptic seizure. The team sympathized with the suffering of the dog, opened the door and left him to get in the ambulance. In the hospital, the ' faithful companion ' was on the side of the stretcher during the whole service.

St. Petersburg Woman Faces Dilemma After Rats Overrun Home

Picture of house with rats
St. Petersburg  - With hundreds of rodents running loose in her house, a St. Pete woman knows she has a problem. But no one can quite agree on how to help Florine Brown.

"The rats have taken over," she admitted. "They are in every room, pretty much, in the house."

The SPCA estimates there at 300 to 500 rats inside the home on 10th Avenue South. Brown said they are practically her family -- or at least their earlier relatives were.

She said it all started with a handful of pet rats two years ago, until some escaped. The rats did their thing, and pretty soon, a few rats had turned into a few hundred.

Browns said she called the SPCA a year ago seeking help, but the agency told her they didn't have room for the rodents. She didn't have the heart to fumigate.

"I want to save them," she explained.

Now the home is filled with feces and the odor is overpowering. Brown, 29, doesn't know what to do. She'd like to humanely trap and remove the squeaky squatters, but that's easier said than done.

"Everyone hates them but I just want to give them love," she added. "Everyone says bad things about rats and I've never been sick or had any diseases or anything."

5 Signs Your Dog is in Pain

Picture of dog
Seeing our pets in pain is never a fun experience, and it’s something every dog owner dreads. Whether it’s a fresh injury or simply our aging elder-pups, we want nothing more than to help them. But it’s important to remember that they can’t always cry out to us when in need. Dogs aren’t humans, so they don’t speak our language. The best thing we can do to keep them comfortable is to learn theirs. Dogs display their pain in certain actions and behaviors that may seem subtle to us. Not everyone is a canine behavioral expert, but these five symptoms below will help you determine whether or not your loved one is in pain.

How Do I Keep My Cat Out Of The Christmas Tree?

Picture of cat in Christmas tree
Getting ready for the holidays and about to put your Christmas tree up? Keep in mind that the tree makes a tempting target for many curious cats. Here are some tips on how to pet-proof your Christmas tree.

When it comes to buying a Christmas tree, I prefer and love real trees. After all, they fill our house with the holiday smells of evergreen. However, keep in mind that if you have cats, real trees are much more tempting. Not only are real trees fragrant and the pine needles more fun to chew on (thankfully, rarely poisonous) but the tree trunk is perfect for scratching and climbing. Consider an artificial tree (after all, less trees are cut down and thrown away, right?). If you do get a real tree, avoid one that is very tall, as a tall tree would be more likely to topple.

It's a Dog's Afterlife: Pope Francis Hints that Animals go to Heaven

Picture of dog
The pontiff’s remarks were interpreted by some as bringing ‘hope of salvation … to animals and the whole of creation’

Animals, too, go to heaven. That, at least, was one interpretation of remarks made by Pope Francis in his weekly general audience in the Vatican.

The endlessly controversial 77-year-old pontiff said: “The holy scripture teaches us that the fulfilment of this wonderful design also affects everything around us.”

The pope went on to quote from St Paul, St Peter and the Book of Revelation in support of the view that “what lies ahead … is therefore a new creation”.

Picture of green cat
Stalking along the backstreets and failing miserably to blend into the background, the sight of this emerald-coloured stray has caused uproar in a Black Sea resort town.
Locals in Varna, Bulgaria, assumed the cat was the victim of a cruel prank by vandals and set up a Facebook group called 'Punishment to the the perpetrator of this criminal act'.

Guinness World Record Holder - Beloved Two-Faced Cat Dies of Cancer at Age 15

Picture of two-faced cat
A cat named Frank and Louie who was born with two faces, two mouths, two noses and three blue eyes has died at the age of 15.

The Telegram of Worcester reports that 'Frankenlouie' died Thursday at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in North Grafton.

The cat's owner, Marty Stevens, said veterinarians believe the cause of death was cancer.

The cat's owner, Marty Stevens, said veterinarians believe the cause of death was cancer.
Frank and Louie made it into the 2012 edition of Guinness World Records as the longest-surviving member of a group known as Janus cats, named for a Roman god with two faces.

Janus cats almost never survive, and most have congenital defects.
They usually only live a few days.

A breeder brought the rare feline to Stevens, a vet nurse, to be euthanized in September of 1999.

However Stevens, not believing the cat would survive, decided to take him home with her and care for him.

She fed Frankenlouie using tubes in both mouths, soon realizing that only the 'Frank' side was connected to his esophagus.

He did, however, eat enough for two.

Stevens said her cat quickly developed a strong personality and loved to walk around her neighborhood in North Grafton.

"He’s just so affectionate and sweet he usually wins people over," she told The Telegram-Gazette in 2011.

He functioned as a regular cat.

While blind in his center eye, both his outer eyes worked fine, and while he had two noses and mouths, he had only one brain.

Stevens is now understandably devastated to lose her pet of 15 years.

She said her fell quite ill around Thanksgiving and she took him to the Tuffs University clinic.

The vet told her it was best to euthanize him, because he was in quite a lot of pain.

Stevens says once her sadness passes she wouldn't mind looking for another Janus to bring home with her, just like she did with Frankenlouie in 1999.

"I would love to do it again," she said.

National Dog Show 2014 Results: Nathan the Bloodhound Wins Best in Show

Picture of dog getting award at dog show
It was a very jowly Thanksgiving, as Nathan the Bloodhound took home Best In Show at the National Dog Show.

Nathan licked pretty much everybody possible, including NBC's Mary Carillo. He had won Best in Group at the Westminster Dog Show, but hadn't taken the top prize. He's a rare winner from the popular breed, as the bloodhound had never won at the National Dog Show and still has yet to win in the 100-plus years of Westminster.

The winners of each group were:

Hound group: Bloodhound

Herding group: Bearded collie

Working group: Samoyed

Terrier group: Smooth fox terrier

Toy group: Affenpinscher

Sporting group: Gordon setter

Non-sporting breeds: French bulldog

For the most part the dog show went off without a hitch ... except for the one part where a miniature pinscher got away from its handler and made a run for it. We've never seen that one before, and the handler did not exactly handle it well. FOLLOW US!
